I agree with gg. Cloves enhance the flavor of pears. You could sprinkle the cut pear with a little brown sugar and the fresh ground nutmeg then put it under the broiler to carmelize the sugar. YUM!

Apple or Pear Cake
CAKE
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
4 cups raw diced apples or pears
TOPPING
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/4 lb butter
Cake:.
Mix all cake ingredients by hand in order given.
Pour in a greased 9 x 13 inch pan or springform pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes and remove.
Topping:.
In saucepan mix all ingredients and bring to a slow boil for 3 minutes.
Pour over cake and return to oven for 4 minutes.

I like a bit of nutmeg.
You can also use a little cardamom, but, a little goes a long way for most people.
Cinnamon makes people think "apple" in my opinion.

I'd really recommend CLOVES.
You could also use mace.
Cinnamon and nutmeg are old standards, but cloves are the absolute BEST with pears.
Also, lemon is nice too.

cinnamon & nutmeg are good options as well as cardamom. You can also use ginger (dried, crystallized) and this would add alot of flavor, just be sure not to overdo it.
