A knowledgeable artist will have an idea of how best to break up the design into pieces, either to space out your expenses or make sure sessions aren't too long. Some people can take hours at a time under the needle, some only an hour. Since you don't know how you'll react, it is probably wise to plan some good stopping points beforehand. Start with a part of the design that will stand on its own, if possible, just in case you can't follow through with the full sleeve.
Your ability to "take" tattoo pain has nothing to do with being a "sissy." Many people have an uncontrollable physiological reaction to the direct trauma to the body, something like a mild state of shock. Even if you feel like you can take the pain, your body may have other ideas.
Also, I have known some artists who prefer not to tattoo below the elbow on first-time clients - they have a policy of not tattooing areas of the body clearly visible while you're clothed. The idea behind this is to allow you to get used to having a tattoo and the social implications of it before you get one that you won't be able to hide at work, et cetera.

The thing about a sleeve is you can take your time and add as you go. You dont have to have the whole outline done in the first sitting. You can talk to the tattoo artist about what you want and work on an idea. You can start at the top and then do down. Go balls out!!! I have a complete back piece that I still have 3 sittings for it to be done. I have gone thru 10 sittings so far. Some days I hate sitting thru the tattoo and just want it to be done but most days I enjoy it knowing that I will have one beautiful kiss a piece of art for the rest of my life. Good luck!!

I'm halfway though having a full sleve for my first tattoo. If you have found the right artist, and have worked with them to get something unique, that feels right for you then go for the sleve. If you're in any way not sure, even a little niggly bit then don't get anything tatooed. Wait until you're 100 percent.
Personally at 40 years of age , my first tattoo has been a wonderfull journey of discovery and by no means will be my last. Good luck.

If your going to do it, do it, don't pussyfoot around. Plan it out really well so everything fits and it doesn't look all thrown together. An example of thrown together would be a bunch of little tattoos with a lot of wasted space filled in with a background. If a sleeve is what you want you should get a lot of the outline first.

It's only a bad idea if you doubt yourself and aren't sure of it at the moment. Personally, I would start off slowly because tattoos are expensive. Pain is only a measure of how much you can stand. The more there is to it, the more it will cost, longer it will take and the more it may hurt. It's up to you if you want to do it in pieces or do it all. I would work with an artist on the outline and do that much then go back and do color as you can afford it. At least at that you would have the basic design and could add on as you wanted to. My advice is to talk to an artist about it and what you want. Good luck, happy tattooing!
-If you want it, go for it. Be sure you have the money ready to have it done right because you pay for what you get. I'm going to get more in time and as I can afford them. If you have the balls for it and want to, go balls out.

Sleeves are great, but i think you should add on as you go thru life, it has more meaning rather then picking different designs out of a book, then you will just have a lot of tattoo's that everyone else has....for instance a good friend of mine is from Chicago.. He got a big *** bear on his arm when he was younger..LOL! Anyway, he recently started a cemetery sleeve, he has lost a lot of loved ones in his life.. Now he has a this beautiful memorial on his arm and it looks like a bear is creeping thru it.. you might think that sounds weird, BUT IT HAS MEANING!! to him, it's not just like he woke up one day and said " oh, i want a sleeve"

No matter where you get it or who you are there's going to be some degree of pain.
If you have a sleeve in mind then do it! If you have the money and resources then more power to you!
Think of it this way: if you get a little sissy one just to see how it feels, will it make you happy? Will you regret wasting $50 or so bucks on a little one that means nothing to you?
It will hurt, I assure you. But it's like having a child: you go through all the pain while it's happening, but once it's done and you see it then all that pain goes away.. it's worth it and you feel accomplished.
DO IT IF YOU WANT IT! Don't let anyone tell you what to do or not to do to your body! It's yours!

Do what you want. If you feel like you can handle the pain, go for it. If you feel like you can't handle the pain anymore, you can always stop and wait for the next session. It just may take longer to finish. A full sleeve is gonna be HELLA expensive too, so I hope you have a lot of money. :)
But seriously, do whatever is going to make you happiest. If a sleeve is what you want, then get it. :)

Well this is really a decision you have to make yourself but before you go "balls out" ask yourself these questions:
When I'm older will I really want a tattoo sleeve?
Will I ever want to get rid of it?
Am I just doing it to be cool?
If you said no to the first one or yes to the other two than you might want to reconsider. Remember: tattoo's are permanent, you can never get rid of them and if you can it will be more painful and expensive than it was to get the tattoo. I hope you make the right decision. Good luck!
