Yes, they make great pets with children. We just got a six month old Yorkie and it has turned out to be a blessing! The hardest part is with her being a puppy she wants to chew so lots of toys of its own are in order. As for the children, they must learn to be gentle because Yorkies are SMALL. For the most part don't let the kids carry it around by the neck. They have very small windpipes. They are well suited in a family enviroment if treated with a little care.
If interested there is a great picture of ours at our site that you can see here...

Yorkies are wonderful pets but as others have said not the best breed for a household with young children as they are a bit fragile. Another breed, such as a Shih Tzu would be a better choice. They are usually good with children, don't shed, and are sturdier although still a small dog. Most reputable breeders will not sell a Yorkie to someone with young children because of the danger to the dog and to the child if the dog "fights back" when accidentally injured. Good luck to you in finding the perfect pet for your household.

I have 2 Yorkie's and a Yorkie-Poo. They are very good with kids. But from the ages of your kids, I think you would have to watch any dog you get. Kids at that age want to pull a dogs tail, or squeeze too hard, and that could make just about any dog want to knock them over. All in all, I would say that Yorkies are good with children.

a yorkie is NOT reccomended for children below 8-10 years of age, the breed is simply too small, too easily injured and too bold...in defense of being too roughly handled they are very likely to snap and bite.
if your set on a yorkie wait till the kids are older (the youngest should be at least 8)
at the age the kids are right now i suggest adopting a young adult dog from a shelter (puppies are too boisterous for little kids and can know them down and hurt them accidentally) so between 1-3 years old thats good with kids, and nothing under 25lbs.

I wouldn't have any other dog BUT a Yorkie. There are the most adorable babies. But there are so small and fragile it would NOT be good for small children. They need to be with older kids and adults. At least 7 or 8 yrs or older. Go to: www.puppyfind.com and seach for a more appropriate pet. Maybe one that gets to the about 15 pounds. Jack Russells, pugs, poodles, cocker mixes, etc.

Yorkies are generally not recommended for such young children. Ages 2-4 could accidently injury such a small dog.
It would be better to get a larger more sturdy dog.

Yes. My uncle got a Yorki for his 2 yr old and 4 yr old and they LOVE it. The puppy is small enough for them to play with and run around with as opposed to a golden retriever who would do nothing but knock them down.

Any dog can be great with young children depending on their health, genetics, temperament, training and socialization. Small dogs, in my limited experience, can be very mouthy and are harder to catch in the act. As long as you treat it like it's a dog and train it properly a yorkie pup should be a good addition to the family.
