From the information I've read, it IS illegal to have children of the opposite sex sharing a room in Massachusetts, no matter WHO they live with. I would speak to a lawyer before I started decorating.

I have a three twelve months previous daughter and a 6 month previous son sharing a similar room. I had a similar mission arising with a adorning plan. My first concept changed into fish. also like some different person reported jungle, or farm. All childrens have a tendency to love animals. My own feeling is you dont favor to do alot to childrens rooms regardless of the reality that, they grown out of issues so quickly. very few decals perchance a pair images or posters, and a neat sheet set and that would want to favor to be good.

paint the walls a bright yellow first.
Then go with a nice green or blue for your son and pinks and yellows for your daughter.
Keep the room pretty basic, decorate things he's into along with a few pictures for your daughter.
I would just buy what you like and you don't necessarily have to go with any theme. Try asking them when they are NOT together.
I like Nemo myself
My daughter did a butterfly theme, a monkey theme and a bear theme.
I did a sesame street theme and it worked for both my son and daughter. I personally love bright yellow walls, it makes the kids smarter. Or lets say, they use to say, the brighter the room, the brighter the child :)
Whatever you do decide to go with, make sure they both agree. Have you tried JC Penney's online site yet? It's much better than what they have in the stores.
Good luck and have fun, you can always paint 2 walls one color and the other 2 walls a different color.
I just painted my spare bedroom yellow and green (called mint hint green from home depot) What a refreshing room that is now. Just make sure it's comfortable enough for them to want to spend time there, like really enjoying going to bed at night too :)

As far as the legal answers you're getting... I'm sure the law varies from state to state but in Texas, they would not be able to share a room. (I only know this b/c I know someone on housing w/ a son and a daughter and they had to move once her son turned 5 b/c it was a 2 bedroom.)
As far as your answer goes... I would also choose Diego & Dora or something neutral. Tough one; good luck!

When my 2 nieces and nephew were sharing a room, their room had an underwater theme. The benefits were that it's pretty inexpensive, widely available, appealed across the ages (3, 7, 9) and they could have a small aquarium or hermit crab to fit the theme.

Paint the walls blue and put glow in the dark stars on the ceiling. You can carry the out doors them by having a green throw rug and if you are really crafty, paint a mural of kids playing sports, catching butterflies and fishing!!
OR..do a nautical or patriotic theme!!

I would do primary colors for the comforters and let them chose pillows or sheets that match their personalities. I wouldn't spend too much money, though, because kids at that age change what they like at the drop of a hat.

Target sells bed decor in the same pattern for boys and girls, the girls has lighter colors.
I would do something like "outside" with like green rugs and blue walls with clouds and blue or white comfortors, I dont think either of them would have a problem with that.......
Or you could do primary colors.

How about Dora and Diego or the Dragon Tails(if they make comforters for that)
FYI to the person above- I don't know anywhere where it is illegal for boys and girls to share a room.
