I have a cat and she gave birth to 6 beautiful kittens. (one died when birthing unfortunatly) Well its been 2 1/2 mounths and we just gave them all away recently. The mother cries every night and looks in every room in the house calling for them. Can cats be sad? it kills me when she does it, it just makes me miss the kittens even more. And i feel soooo sorry for giving them away, but it had to be done. How can i confort her and when will she realize her babies are gone and stop crying for them?

Thanks for all the tips. She still cries but less now, im trying to give her all the affection she needs, and try to steer her away from calling for her babies whenever she goes downstairs. (Thats where they usually sleep, eat, and play) all can do is love her and grieve with her. I loved those kittens as much as the mother did, and cried for days when they were taken. T T

It's natural that she will be sad and search for her missing kittens. Just as with humans, how long the grieving process takes, varies greatly with each individual. Food treats, extra affection and reassurance will help her in the short term. Grooming is also a good way of comforting her and it will help reinforce the bond between you. Cats are creatures of habit, so try not to change your normal daily routine too much, as this may cause her additional stress.

The article "When Cats Grieve" has lots of information that may help your and your cat.

Hope this helps.

Oh yes, mother cats do grieve once the kittens are gone.
Trying calling her up on your lap when you sit down to watch tv and just pet her more now. That will comfort her.

If she's still into"Playing" maybe you could pick her up a new toy or buy one of those lazor lights that some cats love to chase.
Try and distract her as much as you can by focusing your attention on her, loving her, new toy, cat treats, etc.

In time, she will stop, in the mean time that's all you can do for her. Oh and you might want to have her fixed, it's so sad to have to go through this I know for everyone even you.

So hang in there, be patient, and by giving her love, it will also help you.

I raised kittens for years and the saddest part of the whole experience was watching/hearing the mama search all over for her kittens. It is really heartbreaking. Yes, the mama's grieve for their kittens, so pick her up and give her a lot of "cuddle/love". If you give her a lot of attention, she'll soon get over looking for her babies. It make take a week or so, but eventually she'll be fine. Good luck and keep on loving her. It would be a good time to take her to be spayed !! Then, NEITHER of you will have to go through this again.

Cats do feel a full range of emotions and yours is feeling sadness over her loss. As with any loss it takes time to get over it. Give her extra love and affection and in time she will be feeling better. Oh and don't forget to have her spayed as soon as she's ready.
