If you have spent the night at someone's home and you have to leave in the morning, but they have not yet woken up by the time you have to leave, what is the proper etiquette for handling this?

Assume it is someone whom it would be awkward to awaken with a knock on the door. They also knew you had to leave in the morning; you aren't just running out.

What if there is no way for you to lock the door? That was the worst part! (And it wasn't even early...10:30 am.) I hated leaving the door unlocked. Should you apologize for that in the thank-you note?

get up,
tidy the room you spent the night in;make the bed, close doors quietly,
tidy the bathroom when you go down stairs,
wash your cup up after you have drunk your morning drink,
write a note, saying, soory i've had to leave for work, many thanks for allowing me to stay the night, enjoyed your company very much,
leave the note on the table
opendoor, put your coat on leave post key through letter-box.
for that extra special touch, if you can afford it, send a bouquet of flowers saying on card thanks alot.

Just say the night before ...hey I will be leaving early in the morning ..gotta get an early start so I might be gone before you wake up so thanks in advance for letting me stay and stuff" then smile brightly. They will be cool. Leave a happy note in the morning.
One time my friend and her friend who I hardly knew stayed over and when I was in the shower in the morning they knocked on the door to say they were leaving. I thought it was really rude. Like they could have at least waited until I was out of the shower or just left earlier and left nice note. But once I was up they shoulda waited.

Quietly clean up as much as you can after yourself (make the bed, roll up the sleeping bag). Leave a little note saying thank you and lock the door behind you.

If they are aware that you need to leave early, you can feel free to do so without any awkwardness at all!

Make sure all is neat and tidy, gather your things and make your departure quietly, and you have the perfect exit.

If you were going to leave a 'thank you gift', it would be nice to do so now, so it is there when they wake up. A brief note of thanks is always apreciated also.

Cheers :-)

I've been in this situation before, since I need to be on the road to my morning class by 4am.

I usually say my goodbyes the night before, try to sneak out quietly at 4, and call them later in the day after they are up to thank them for letting me stay.

Explain the situation to them the night before, set your alarm, and get up at the time, then leave a polite and concise thank you note for the hosts. Leave quietly, and later during that day call, and reiterate your thanks.

I would just leave as quietly as I could. I would leave a short thank you note expressing my appreciation.

i think i would first, tell them the night before that you need to leave early, and say your good bye's and thanks you's then. in the morning, leave a note thanking them again and that you'll be in touch soon. no need to wake anyone since you've already discussed it.
