Yes and No. It is easily treatable with antidepressants and therapy, and over some time her depression may begin to go away. It however, may not fully go away but she will be able to function properly. Than, her psychiatrist will start to slowly ease her off the anti-depressants once the chemicals in her brain are balanced again...she sounds like she has bipolar disorder. Is she hyperactive one day and extremely tired, depressed, and angry the next? She needs to see a psychiatrist immediately...

No cure yet, but it is manageable, like diabetes is manageable. I hope she has a doctor and medication. If so, her dose might have to be adjusted or her medication changed. There are so many kinds of medicines out there for depression. Catch her on a good day, tell her you love her and want to help her, and ask her if she'll mention to the doctor that her mood changes so much and so often.
If you're concerned about the suicide part, like it's more than just her expressing her extreme sadness, this answer might catch a lot of response but try and find her doctor's phone number and call him or her yourself. Tell him who you are and that your mom is his patient, and that she might be suicidal. Let the doctor take action after that. You can't talk her out of it yourself, and it's too much to ask someone your age to do. I'm sorry you're going through this but it will get better. It takes time.

Wow...depression is so difficult but the #1 thing to do is to get professional help. So many meds out there r doing wonders. There IS help. You DON'T have to live a depressed life. If she is not going to go to doctor...head to your local library. Unfortunately the category is MENTAL HEALTH so everyone knows what your problem is, but still go & read some books on it. I am also a believer in eliminating sugar from the diet to alleviate the symptoms. Walking is my secret!
All the best.

Is your mother seeking professional help? If not, that is the first, very important thing to do. I suggest going to a person recommended by your local mental health department.
Also, some things that can help are; a healthy diet with no street drugs or alcohol, exercise and tools from a counselor on how to cope with lifes ups and downs.
