In R&S, people thumbs down you just for having a different opinion or a different philosophy. The militant people on this section keep thumbs down others for having differences in faith. Who thinks that we should just abolish this corrupt system and get rid of the thumbs up/down thing?

how about just a thumbs up button-then you cant put someone down but you could still show approval---just my thoughts-smile and enjoy the night

I find it useful.

If someone has already answered a question well, then I can simply register my approval and move on without cluttering up the question by saying essentially the same thing.

Likewise if I disagree with someone's answer (whether it's a matter of opinion or fact) I can again register my opinion without necessarily typing out an answer.

If you agree with an answer, thumbs up. Disagree, thumbs down. If you are giving thumbs down to someone just because you don't like them, then the only person whose being cheated is yourself, since your thumbs down doesn't have any meaning. I'd rather get a meaningless thumbs-down than a post (or worse, an email) attacking me personally.

I wish they'd re-introduce the thumbs up/down for the questions too.

Someone having a different opinion or a different philosophy than I have doesn't bother me, why should it?
The thumbs thing is just a way for people to express their opinions...why should people not have the right to agree or disagree with someone?
One good thing about the thumbs down thing...I have found it to be a handy way to clear my screen of long-winded, wordy answers that are wayyyy too boring to shovel through....
Other than that, who really cares??

For that very reason, I don't really pay that much attention to the thumbs up or thumbs down, but it is one method of determining a best answer when the original asker neglects to choose one (which happens all-too-often, particularly with questions that were never intended to be serious anyway). Without it, you are reduced to letting the voters choose the best answer, and it usually happens that each person chooses their own (if they bother to vote at all).

A better system, in my opinion, would be to penalize askers who do not choose a best answer and disallow voting for oneself (the same way that you currently cannot give yourself a thumbs up or thumbs down).

There been two in person thumbs up I received assuming that meant we're okay everything only received one thumbs down in person. Im going to take those very seriously or to literally from now on honestly it isn't like it's going to effect my real life!!!

I think that they should also add a thumbs up/down feature to questions too. Besides, I like giving a thumbs down for huge cut-n-paste posts & rants. This way it opens up the room to read actual answers. Just ignore them if you hate them so much.

Because there is no punishment for the answerer for having a thumbs down rating, I think it doesn't matter what other people think. Also, If you want to give people ratings based on your opinion that's your problem. What else is there to base your rating on?

For a site like this it seems there is a constant conflict between the need for traffic and the need for quality posts. It's a lot easier for someone just to thumbs down you, than it is to disagree with you intellectually; thus traffic increases, quality decreases..

Since you are observant enough to figure this out, I must ask -- why do you care? If that's the way you feel about it, why not ignore the stupid thumbs, and let the kiddies play with their toys?
