I was watching a program and they were talking about bringing back the draft to the US and making it mandatory every time the President declares a war . To be honest this does seem interesting . For example - If Mr. Bush had to have a draft to invade Iraq and Afghanistan we most likely wouldn't be there and if we were , public opposition would be so strong be now , that the war would be over .

The people on the show also stated it was a shared sacrifice and also said the President might abuse the power since every time he declares war , he has an enormous amounts of man power .

Anyway - Do you believe a mandatory draft is a good idea ? Why or why not .

I wish we still offered young men that have gotten into trouble the option of joining the military. I know that some Will not agree with me but it helped them to have something to stand for and it helped the rest of us as well.

No i don't believe a draft yet perhaps mandatory compulsary provider like Israel has may be a greater useful concept. some human beings are not meant to be squaddies and would endanger others. That and that i think of somebody should not be rigidity to kill somebody else for no obvious reason different than the reality that somebody advised you they're your enemy yet that's merely me. and you advised me that we're not going to invade Iran and on an analogous time as you will possibly be ideal yet we will have some form of militia action the place we can want preserve some borders. The plans have already been laid out and that's the reason there is all this communicate approximately bringing decrease back the draft.

The President doesn't declare war, Congress does.

Congress would never support a mandatory draft. That's almost a guarantee of future American aggression and a sure sign of a drift towards a state dominated by military thinking.

Also we have to face the ugly truth that a volunteer army is in place so as to protect the future doctors, lawyers, engineers and scientists of America from being put into a hail of bullets instead.

Grim thought, but true.

I believe in mandatory service but not a mandatory draft. You have a choice, military or some sort of civil service. Might get rid of the entitlement issues in the country. Make everyone serve. The civil service period would be longer and pay less.
A mandatory draft only is a last resort in modern warfare. Costs too much money and time to train and equip your average combat solder so a military cant be built up as quickly as say in WW2.

Depends on the curcumstances. WWII we needed a draft. Iraq we didn't cause we had such a surplus of enlistment after 9/11. Nobody likes a draft. You get much better warriors when they choose to fight. But when you need to do something you have to do it not because its unpopular but because its nessacary. I do not see a draft happening any time in the future. WHY? Because you use a draft when your fighting a large enemy. Say if China attacked (there army size is double ours) we'd nuke the crap out of them.

I believe it is a bad idea. Although I think the ratio between civilians and military is a little pathetic.

Strange that the only people talking about a draft are the Dem's who don't want to spend money on the troops we have now.

Well, since the all volunteer force was enough to go in in real life, why do you think a draft would stop it in fantasy land? Then again it might have meant we could have sent the stupid lowlife draftees in first to absorb the punishment of the enemy firepower, then the "real" troops could go in and finish off the bad guys.
