Mostly genetics- however, as we age, our ability to accomodate (Focus at different lengths) usually diminishes, thus the rx's for astigmatism, bifocals, ect.

I think the most significant reason is genetics, but computer use can combine with that to speed up degeneration. Age also plays a large part... the lens begins to harden in most people starting by age 40, even if they don't have any visual problems. This can lead to eyestrain which is especially noticeable in tasks such as reading, but is not caused by it.

Illness, degeneration, genetics, sitting too close to the tv/monitor. There are lots of reasons. Getting old, ask an
optometrist.

Watching TV and reading do not damage your eyesight, contrary to the old wives tales.
Injuries and illness play a part, of course. Genetics is also a big factor, which is why you should have regular eye examinations; that's the best way to spot the early signs of glaucoma or cataracts, for instance.
But the main reason is that, thanks to evolution, eyes are functional -- that is, they do what we need them to do -- but they're not really well designed and not built to last.

Genetics is the most significant factor, but its not always the cause.
For example, there is no one at all in my extended family that wears glasses, but I am nearsighted, so obviously there is some sort of environmental factor. What that factor may be, I am not sure.

Injury (obviously), Disease (either contracted or genetic) and poor eye care.
The evidence for eye damage from cathode tubes i.e. TVs and older computer monitors is not totally conclusive, but I use a flat screen just to be sure.

Well, I've had glasses since I was 7 years old. I'm now 30 and wear contacts and I have severe astigmatism. I don't know why it happens, but it wasn't my age or a computer!

too much time alone with Rosy Palm.
Okay, for real, it's not using common sense: not having adequate lighting when using our eyes.
