We had two home invasion robberies in our neighborhood last week. It is an upscale neighborhood. Mainly older professional couples. Thankfully no one was hurt.
Scared me to death. We make sure our doors are dead bolted, all windows locked.
If we heard intruder in the house, the first thing we would do is call 911.
My husband was a military sharp shooter. He keeps a loaded gun in our bedroom. We are older, would have no chance to physically "fight" off attackers. If possible, my husband would shoot them.
Pray this NEVER happens!

The response to such an event will be different for everyone. Some general rules of thumb, call 911 on a house phone preferrably, do not speak if they are close just let dispatch hear you talk or whisper if your not found yet. If your comfortable with a weapon keep it handy if not a dishsoap (pull push lid kind) filled with ammonia and some food coloring will render your attacker blind (really blind, and dyed) I taught my kids how to defend themselves and shoot firearms by the time they were in kindergarten. I also have dogs. Many dogs. Small dogs (more than one) make harder targets to shoot than one large dog, they are also more vicious, there is a reason they call them "ankle biters" more than one small dog will keep the intruders busy while you attack or escape. Run if you can, hide if you can, their tactics expect you to be frightened so don't be. Be afraid later, panic causes problems, train regularly with your family, visit a martial arts studio where you can learn defensive tactics, alone and with your family. Dead bolts are helpful, but won't stop someone who wants in. The old Castle Drop Down bars are better if you are not worried about interior design. They can not be kicked or shoved in. I use chain link fence posts that drop down into metal u shaped brackets that are sunk into my support beams. Make sure windows have some type of secure locks, In dangerous areas some folks install glass block its harder to smash. Especially in ground level windows. I have known some folks to string piano wire from the tops to the bottom of their windows, if someone breaks the glass and tried to climb in they get tangled up in the wire, it doesn't break easily and will cause noises allowing your ankle biter to bark and alert you.

It depends. If it was one person, you could take action against your attacker. Usually the winner in any altercation is the one who attacks first, and decisively. You have to commit to really wanting to disable your attacker. Be careful with owning weapons - many who buy guns for defense, never get training, and many dont have the stomach to actually use them. Many get shot with thier own guns...Again, be decisive..better to be alive and in trouble with the legal details later, than be dead now.
If there are mulitiple attackers, you may have to take a submissive role. Your goal is to delay them until help arrives... Tell them your name, talk to them, engage them. Become a human in their eyes, it will be harder to for them to want to kill you. Be patient and wait for them to make a mistake. Be observant of your surroundings...
The main thing is dont make your home easily invaded. Get good locks, alarms, lights, communication systems, guard dog, etc.
Don't display your wealth, live modestly. Dont associate with people who do drugs...many invasions are because some junky or thug THOUGHT there was drugs in the house, whether you actually have any or not doesn't matter...you get the idea.

First of all if you're near a phone call 911
secondly I would protect my family with any means necessary. Meaning take them out with extreme prejudice

Don't waste your time calling the police because they're more than likely the ones breaking in! Start shooting and make sure you make every bullet count! If they want to enter my place unannounced they better have a tank and air support! I know how to disable either a tank or copter with just a laser pointer!

Each room has a weapon in an accessible position.....
If I cant get to one of my firearms there are other "decorations" fully functional hanging on the walls.....
My plan:
1. Attack with lethal force.
2. Call the authorities...
3.Wait the three hours before they arrive...

i was/am a victim if a house invasion. There is really nothing you can do other than wha ever it is that he intruder tells you to do. It is very scary and you do NOT want to piss them off in any way shape or form.

I don't want to discuss specific tactics online, but rest assured, I will defend myself vigorously.
