Mitsubishi discontinued their DLP manufacturing? That is PURE BS and you KNOW IT.

Now....BEFORE you call a serviceman, I gotta ask if the Picture darkness is SPLIT right down the middle of the screen, if so, LOOK in your Video settings and make sure your FEATURES are NOT SET TO DEMO or AUTO modes....

I've had a couple TV's where I found the unit in demonstration mode...it lets you compare the difference between on mode and off mode.....

Other than that, you MAY have the mirror in your LIGHT Tunnel loose....that makes either the Top or left/right side look like you're looking thru sunglasses....picture is present but somebody inserted black sunglass in front of it....

I suspect those two problems to be at the heart of it all....Of course I work on the Samsung line...

Well its probably a year or 2 old. And being a Samsung DLP; well Samsung has more problems in the DLP line than anyother..Samsung in general does not make reliable tvs..

Well the only thing you can do it to take it to a local repair shop.

Power off the unit and take a look at the bulb. Sometimes the mirror coating film that helps reflect the light likes to come unraveled. If it looks ok, then you have a major problem with the tv. And in most cases, being a Samsung and out of warranty, your going to have a high costly repair and a long wait period to get parts.

I'm afraid this is un-true:

"well Samsung has more problems in the DLP line than anyother..."

Both Pioneer and Mitsubishi had to discontinue their DLP manufacturing while they worked out problems. Pioneer actually contacted customers who bought their DLP televisions and bought them back before the customers had problems. Samsung - did a good job designing their color wheels and did not have the same problems.

I could suggest a few things, but my advice would be to call a TV repair service. You might just need a new lamp ($200) or someone with a can of compressed air can clean stuff off the color wheel. It could also be the DLP chip - but ... I kind of doubt it. You really need a service guy to take a look.

I would go with the Sony 50" 3LCD for $1300.00 I have a 42" Sony HDTV LCD Grand Wega, and it's got a good picture both on Digital channels & HD ones, because of the interface technology that filters both signals to give you the picture on each. DLP has issues with colors being way too intense, making it look artificial, instead of natural looking.
