simple solution is called a sanitary grooming, it costs about $10 at the groomers (if that) and they simply trim the hair around the anus and on males the penis to keep debris from getting stuck...
that being said however a dog with normal solid bowel movment is shouldnt be a problem...
i have been around long haired chis all my life and the only time ive needed to clean my dogs butt was after a sever bout of diahrrea from something she got into...

Yes it can happen. It is best to keep the hair around the rear area trimmed or shaved. This will cut down on the poop getting stuck in the fur. We keep our poms and shih tzu's rear fur chipped short for that reason and it will also cut down on a chance of an impacted anal gland.

The groomer shaves around the anus. In between grooming when the hair is longer, I rarely have to clean my dogs' butts and it's only when they have a bout of diarrhea.

Medium size hair because it is easy in order to handle and you can still carry out most of the hairstyles

You simple have to bring it to a groomer to keep hair in that area short. I owned a long haired Dachshund and now have a Yorkie, grooming is essential in these areas for small dogs.

This happens in all long haired animals. Like others have said, if you keep the hair trimmed around that area then you wont have as much trouble. Heck, even humans have that problem if they have a whole lot of butt crack hair! Ewwww~

It often happens to long haired dogs. If you don't want to do that, then clip the coat short.
