can't legally "buy" blood in the US last i knew. The charges on your hospital bill are for the lab and other expenses of storing and testing and keeping our blood supply safe and readily available to those who need it. Even if your friends and family donate to "replace" what you recieve your hosp charge will be the same. You also in al likely hood will not recieve the actual blood they donate, the only control you have over blood you recieve is if you bank your own before an elective surgury......

About $270.00 for each unit of red cells, with the plasma drawn off. Frozen plasma costs about $80 a unit. Pheresis platelets cost about $800 a unit, but are only good for 5 to 7 days.

These prices include the following:

Price of bags from manufacturer, and shipping.

Rent on collections sites, or lease on collections vehicles.

Cost of testing kits to test for the 10 knows diseases that can actually be tested for, plus shipping.

Cost of wages to pay medical technologists to actually do the testing on each and every unit of blood drawn.

Building and maintenance of walk-in freezers and refrigerators to store the blood until it is needed. $4,000 a month electric bills.

Computer systems to track and identify donors, tests results, disbursements of units, track hospital orders, and qualified drivers to deliver the units to the hospitals where they will eventually be needed.

Waste management companies to dispose of unusable units and related testing leftovers. Collection kits and testing kits are one-use-only items.

Wages and salaries of those who manage inventories and those who manage the blood industry in general.

Pretty cheap, I'd say, for another chance to live...

The person above me is pretty on target for the actual blood according to my hosp statements. But dont forget the other bloodbank services such as type and cross and the lab tests.

It's free if you use your own, but I wouldn't recomend it.
