Not necessarily....

Some all-wheel drive is continusily engaged, other types engage as needed.

Some types also use the rear wheels as the primary drive wheels and some use the fronts...... Generally speaking cars with AWD use the fronts as the primary drive wheels, while SUV/truck types use the rear wheels.

Yes all wheel drive is permanently engaged. And most of the time doesn't have a low range option either.

yes, but it enguages differently.

four wheel drive the front axle and rear axle get 50% of the power from the engine, EACH.

AWD normally has most of the power 80-90% go thru the front wheels until they slip, then it kicks more power to the rear tires until they all get traction.

That's right but the power transmitted to the axles vary.
