Can anybody tell me anything about these and why we believe in them?

It was an attempt on our ancestors part to marginally control their lives. Like throwing salt over your shoulder when you've spilt some, if you get good luck, hey it worked. If nothing happens, they'd go about thinking that they just averted a major bout of bad luck. In effect, to their minds, they made a difference.
Nowadays we believe/do them because;
-it's convenient (who would like to argue with their grandparents for not doing something they've believed in for years)
-it's fun (like kissing under mistletoe)
-it's tradition.
-it does no harm so why not cover all the bases.

They are sheer ignorance, having no rational logics behind them.

There is no need for superstition. Superstitions are for people who distrust God. If you know God you know that no truth can disprove Him.
