the electric fan is controlled by a solid state relay that is pulse width modulated. this varies the speed instead of just giving you on and off. the relay is located under the battery and under the vacuum reservior. you have to remove the front bumper cover to get to it. it is a pretty commonn repair. many times they will burn up because of a worn fan motor. jump the wires to the fan and make sure the motor sounds ok before you replace the relay, so you don't burn up the new one. relay is turned on by a signal from the engine controller. it is not controller by the coolant sensor like everyone seems ot think. the fan will normally come on around 217 or 219, or with the a/c on, and will turn back off around 200. and no, 220 is not boiling. even if you had straight water in your cooling system, with a 16 psi radiator cap, the system would not start to boil until it reached 260 degrees, and coolant rasises the boiling point even higher.

I also have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; regardless of the shown fact that it rather is a 6 cylinder. i'm getting approximately 19-21 in the city and 24-26 on the line. i'd think of a V8 would get quite under what I experience. i admire my Grand Cherokee. that is been exciting to rigidity and intensely reliable. while you're transforming into a powerful deal, i'd say, "decide for it!"

the "cooling "fan will come on at about 220 F that feature is controlled by the pcm that gets the temperature from the ect(engine coolant temperature sensor).the hydraulic fan works together with the power steering pump and the pcm if it has a switch on the high pressure hose close to the power steering pump.a clogged hose .a bad power steering pressure hose or failed power steering pump will damage the hydraulic fan.the hydraulic fan is not used for cooling the engine on an overheat condition.rather the elecric fan speed is controlled by the pcm

they usually come on anywhere from 200-220 degrees, that's normal for those to come on at that temperature though,if it ever goes past 220 you have something to worry about, good luck.
