Directly face the fear with sweat and tears. Go to the pet store and buy a spider, if available, and have a friend put the spider on your arm as you look away at something like a movie about spiders. Feel the tickle and self talk that this is not so bad, it's like a friend tickling your arm. Get spiders that don't bit because you will initially jerk and will need to repeat this a few times before you realize it's not all that bad. When ready, look and study the spider walking your arm and again self talk that you are more powerful than that little thing on your arm. I did this with my fear of mice. I bought, at a pet store, non biting mice(pets), and now when I see a mouse running the room, I will kill it with my bare feet. In a sense I scared myself straight the hard way. Face your fears and you'll soon discover the fear really was more than what it was cracked up to be.

behavioral counselors use a technique called 'systematic desensitization' to gradually expose a person to their fear and eventually become used to being around it.

first of all, you'd start to look up pictures of spiders. as gross as it may be, spend some time looking at pictures of real spiders until you can do it without a fear reaction.

the next step .would be to go somewhere where you can see spiders in enclosed situations. maybe an exotic pet store? get used to being around spiders when they are in cages.

the last step is to actually touch spiders. maybe go to that same store and ask if you can put your hand in the case or something.

the key is slowly working your way up to exposing yourself to the phobia in comfortable situations until you are no longer scared of it. i don't know how hard it will be to do it on your own - i think with a counselor, you might have more encouragement and structure to the whole thing, but if you're motivated there's no reason why this technique won't work.

This can be done, but works a little faster if done with a trusted friend. It's called gradual exposure therapy. First look at a photo of a spider. When that no longer drives you nuts, try exposing yourself to a toy spider. When you can handle that, find a real spider and have a friend show it to you. When it becomes too much have him/her remove it from your sight just long enough for you to compose yourself and try it again. Do this over and over until you feel more comfortable and gradually you will overcome your fear. Good luck!

I have the same fear, always have. Snakes don't bother me, only spiders.

Someone tried to tell me once that if I could hold a spider in my hand, it would get me over my fear. And to do this as many times as it takes until I don't fear spiders anymore.

So they recommended holding one of those great big hairy spiders that people sometimes keep as pets. Tarantulas.

I didn't do it. No freaking way could I make myself do it.

But that's the suggestion I was told, so take it for whatever it's worth to you. Good luck!

Kill at least one spider a day for 30 days. The first week use a hammer. During week two use bug spray then step on them. In week three immobilize them with hairspray then pick them up with a tissue and flush them down the toilet (flush twice to make sure they don't crawl back up). During week four grab one spider each day with a tissue and conceal it inside a marshmallow. Offer the marshmallow to people that annoy you. When they tell you how great the marshmallow tastes, you will be cured.

Consider your size and strength - consider the spiders :)

When we turn and run from our fears they always remain behind us just to knock us down from our dreams and steal our desires time and time again. -- When we face our fears and step into them we conquer and transmute the enemy, the fear becomes a new strength and we rise to a new level.

It is impossible to beat an unknown enemy.
Write down each reason why you fear them. Then confront each one of those reasons with question of actual probability.
Your own answers may just reveal that the fear itself is the enemy, and it simply used the spider to be its fall-guy.

The power of the human mind is amazingly awesome - but if you don't control and use it wisely, it will use and control you.
:)

Face your fears. buy a bunch of spiders and let them climb all over you. if they bite you you will realize its not so bad. Ive never been bitten by a spider and I share my room with them. If I see a spider in my room I leave him alone. I realize he might climb over me in my sleep and maybe go in my mouth but I dont care. They cant harm you really they are more afraid of you than you are of them. My fears are of drowning. Thats the worst way to die in my opinion. But I dont fear bodies of water and I enjoy swimming very much.

I am not sure that those answers about "eating one", will actually work. I don't think you can get rid of your fear, only train your brain to tolerate them.

More people fear spiders over death, itself! My wife HATES them, too! Sorry I can't help more.

I have a horrible phobia of spiders and to tell you the truth...I can't even look at one and it is creeping me out talking about them now. I am never going to get over my fear. I want nothing to do with them. I wouldn't even try.

Get a pet tarantula and actually feed him and play with him. When you see other spiders youll be like"Hi.You are so much like my spider.I like you."They dont mind you. They are attracted to carbon dioxide and sleep with you.If they sleep with you every night and don't bite you, then why be afraid of them?Remember that.
