Me and this guy have been flirting for a while and I want a cute way to ask him out. We are both seniors at the same high school. I don't want to do anything like a dinner at a restaurant. I want something low key that lets us talk and enjoy being with each other, but also can cover up any awkward silences.

How about something like ice skating? Or going to a theme park/arcade games? Completely different and non-cliche!
Shows a fun and adventurous side to you and a great way to keep conversation flowing!

Find out what he/she likes, then try to plan things that way.
If he/she likes to walk in the sunset you make that happen.
If he/she likes a nice meal you do what you can to make that happen. Then while on the first date try to get to know him/her more. When that silence occurs just ask a strange question like do you prefer Chinese or Mexican thats just an example.
If you like to be together there shouldn't be that silence.
Good luck
