I'm back from hunting whitetail deer in Parry Sound, Ontario, and during the entire week there was this one deer I saw multiple times that, when alerted or afraid, would yell out this high-pitched, throaty scream that would resonate throughout the forest. I went on YouTube immediately when I got home and didn't find any videos showing this weird scream. I also searched on Yahoo! and couldn't find any answers.

Is this the weirdest thing you have ever heard of? Have you ever seen it happen or heard it happen? I've heard buck calls before but nothing like this. Hopefully I'm not the only one in the world to have witnessed a screaming doe.

It could be a bleat or a snort. There are calls that replicate both sounds. A young deer will often make loud high-pitched bleats when it's in distress or can't find it's mother. All deer snort. It's an alarm to other deer. It's usually followed by the deer running away with it's tail up. They do this by blowing out through their noses. It's usually lasts just about a second but is very loud and they often repeat it. It also helps to moisten their nose which helps them smell what they thing is a danger. Without hearing the sound it's hard to say but I hope this will at least help you look for the sound ona site somewhere.

* I have heard that exact thing. I've seen 'em do it - practically in my face. It sounded like a large water bird squawking. At least that's what I pivtured the first time I heard it. Does used to warn the fawns or the other deer in their group.
I've only heard deer from one particular place use it. The Bergen Swamp of Western NY.

If it was throaty it was a bawl!!
Was the deer s a small young deer if so it is very possible that the animals mother had been killed (by nature or hunter)and it was trying to locate her.Yes it can also be that it was injured but is usually a distress call by younger animals.

The only time I heard one do that was when I shot it with my Hoyt full recurve Bow using bear hunting points & the bow was 47lb.* The Buck only traveled eight (8*) yards before expiring.* I will never forget that horrible sound that it left out.* It would unnerve anyone & send chills up & down your spine & into your brain.*
