Of course it has changed. This is an "asymmetrical" war. There are no masses of troops waiting to move to contact on a front line. That's why I despair when some on these boards bring up folks like General Patton, et. al. Those generals of an earlier era are dinosaurs when it comes to this type of war we are in right now. Most combat actions involve small troop units kicking in doors and shooting people in the head. A lot of those actions never make it to the top of the news because they are done out of sight of the cameras of CNN, Fox News and MSNBC.
Usama Bin Laden was the financier of the Jihadi Madrasas which trained the Salafist Jihadists in terror techniques. Not the trainer. Not the head of operations. All they know is the crude art of assembling and detonating explosive devices to kill civilians. But, by restricting themselves to that sole strategy they have allowed the U.S. to develop counter-measures and to seize the caches of the materials they use to make those devices. By killing fellow Muslims in the basic mistake of adhering to the heretical doctrine of "Takfir" which says it's O.K. in conducting Jihad for Muslim to kill Muslim, they are slowly estranging themselves from most of the Islamic Umma.
Fortunately we have a general in charge of Operation Iraqi Freedom who literally "wrote the book" on how to take on the Salafist Jihadists and defeat them. General Petraeus is the co-author of Field Manual 3-24, which deals with counter-insurgency warfare.

It has little to do with bin Laden.

When preparing for my last deployment, they gave us new uniforms. Completley new basic issue equipment. Upgraded weapons. Everyone had optics of some kind for their weapon.

We dont' evaluate casulaties the way we used to. Everyone has a tourniquete and we are supposed to stop bleeding first, then give additional care.

Computers everywhere. Commo down to squad level and lower. New theories of combat support....

They even took everyone back to Basic Rifle Marksmanship. When they said, "We've always trained you to hold the rifle like this. Don't do that anymore; hold it like this." That was when I knew that absolutely everything had changed. We are a completely different force than we were in 2001.

As for how they fight us... No one can fight us and win, at all. The only way that happens is for us to give up and go home.

bin Laden did not introduce this type of fighting to us, it was used during the 2nd W.W. Our troops do not like fighting house to house because Innocent people always get hurt. Our troops are trained to do this type of fighting; in fact they are trained in all types of fighting but, they would much rather face the enemy than have them hide among the populace of a country. This type of fighting just shows the type of people we are fighting, those who care for nothing but their own concept of religion; anyone who is not for them is their enemy, including children.

bin Laden simply gave cover to the PNAC crowd. He gave them the 'new Pearl Harbor' they needed. It is quite a coincidence that 9/11 happened when Bush was in office and many of the PNAC signers were active in his administration.
