if you have a cable wire connected to your tv and there is a live signal left over from the previous person who lived where you live, yes you have cable. that happened to me once. i rented an apartment and the people before me left with out paying the final bill. the cable company got mad at that and refused to cut off the service. in the mean time, i moved in, hooked the wire to my tv, and had free cable until the last person paid their bill. the minute they paid their final bill, the service was cut off and i turned it on in my name. you dont need the box to get digital channels with the newer tv's but to get the new hd signal, even if you have an hd tv, you need the box cause in most cases, those signals cost extra so they scramble them to make you get the box and pay

Short answer,no. You are simply not entitled to TV programming, and anything you do to get TV from your cable provider withouth subscribing to TV, is considered theft of services. Long answer, good providers will trap as much TV as they can from households that do no subscribe to TV. You might at most get some free analog and QAM HD channels. A cable box you buy would do you no good. It will need activated to work, and cable providers do not activate customer "owned" boxes as a rule. It could be possible that they can detect you connecting unauthorized equipment their line, but it would be unlikely they would go looking.
