What happens when you die? You get really cold. Then you get really stiff. Then your dead cells start to rot. If you are embalmed, you last longer, but you'll still rot. If you're creamated, then you're ash.
That's pretty much it.

"It can't be that if people of different religions die, the Christian would go to heaven, the Buddhist would be reincarnated, the athiest would simply cease to exist.
How can anyone say it doesn't matter what you believe?"
Simple: when you die, you simply cease to exist. It doesn't matter whether or not you believe that.
You seem to be unwilling to entertain the possibility of false beliefs. Why? The fact of the matter is that all of the Christians here who believe that they will live forever are simply wrong. One hundred years from now, every single person on this forum will have ceased to exist - we'll all be dead and gone, regardless of whether or not we believe that we will.

Hindus and Buddhists don't believe that a person must be a Hindu or Buddhist to "progress spiritually"; religious exclusivity is a Western concept.
Nor do Hindus and Buddhists expect to be endlessly reincarnated. They believe after a person is sufficiently spiritually mature, he stops being reincarnated, and that eventually everybody will achieve this.
Being an atheist usually means disbelief in an afterlife.

It means that for Christians, No matter what religion you are you are going to Heaven or Hell
For Buddhist, No matter what religion you are you are going to reincarnate
and For Atheist, No matter what religion you are, after you die you cease to exist.
When people say that it doesn't matter what you believe, Means that to each faith or lack of faith, we all pass through the same things after we die, whether you believe it or not.

It does matter what you believe. Being firmly aligned in belief, with the importance of this reality we are now in, is of vital importance, if we are ever going to transfrorm this world into a better place. We have such serious problems in this world, that are not adequately being addressed. The idea that we should escape this reality, to some altered reality, more to our liking in an afterlife, is not good. It shows a disrespect for the challenging world we live in, and how well it tests and develops the human spirit. Reincarnation of the continuous type, keeps us in the reality of this universe, and forces us to concentrate more on contributing positively to this world in this reality. Struggling in life, exercises the spirit, making it feel more alive, vital, and strong. A strong and moral spirit, will have lots of value in futures lives, as well as this one.

It isn't a matter of what you believe. It is what is true that counts. As the scriptures say, "the devils believe, and they tremble."
All religions were derived and have a basis in the original religion, which was and is Christianity. Adam and Eve were taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ from Jehovah, Himself, who was the pre-mortal Jesus Christ. As time went on they started changing the ordinances and adapted their beliefs to match their own agendas. Each dispensation has a revival of the truth as each prophet restores it from Noah, Abraham, Moses, Isaiah (et al), and Christ Himself. Then came the dark ages where man just made God up into their own likeness and image until Joseph Smith and the restoration.
So it does matter, and you should make it a top priority to find out for yourself. Find a couple of Mormon missionaries and ask them about the Plan of Salvation.

No matter one's religion, when we die, we cease to exist. Hopefully, if we have been found worthy, we can be brought back to life under the Kingdom of God.

If I believe the laws of gravity are one thing, my brother believes they are something else, and you believe the laws of gravity are false, what will happen if we each drop a hammer from our eye-level onto our bare big toe?
All three of us will say "Ouch!!!"
Do our beliefs make a difference there? We can argue until we "Drop the Hammer" (aka: Die) and then we all get equal treatment.

When we die we all cease to exist...death does not differentiate between the religious nor between the religious and the non religious. Death means what it says on the pack.

I think it does not matter what you believe. The same thing happens to everyone regardless of belief.
