Jurors heard opening arguments on Tuesday in the trial of a bird-watching enthusiast who fatally shot a cat that he said was stalking endangered shorebirds.

The defendant, James M. Stevenson, is the founder of the Galveston Ornithological Society and leads bird-watching tours on this Gulf Coast island 60 miles southeast of Houston. If convicted on animal cruelty charges in the shooting last November, he faces up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Wild cats kill thousands of birds ... I hope he gets off! It is silly they are protecting an introduced species that could be considered a pest when it goes wild! Oh and I do love cats... in the house!

Cats are a huge threat to small game. I read an article in a magazine, awhile back, about the best method to use on them, and it was called the FMB(fast moving bullet method)..

Feral cats should be shot on sight!

Same for feral dogs.

At most the guy might deserve a fine for shooting in a restricted area.

A bird enthusiast who carries a gun?? He couldn't have yelled or thrown a rock?

Wonder if this guy is acquainted with those pigeon lovers who were killing hawks. . .

It is strange in this country..... soon you will go to jail for stepping on an ant..... people cry and send death threats to others who accidentally hit stray dogs..... intentionally killing cats and dogs is different though, like this bird watcher did, so I gues he should be punished......

While on an emotional level we can support his action, legally he was wrong and should expect to pay the price for his actions. I have no idea what legal recourse he had but he should have explored that before taking the law into his own hands.

If he shot the cat and killed it quickly, I fail to see any cruelty. Wish I was on that jury......cats are evil and people that keep them can't be trusted.

I have trouble with the penalty, but he was legally in the wrong and should get a slap on the wrist.
