I'm considering a second dog, and if I get one it will either be a Cane Corso or an Akita. My current dog is an 8 month old neutered male Kai Ken (related to the Akita, but will max out around 50 lbs). I wouldn't get the second dog for about 6 months, as I'm about to purchase a home and would wait until I was settled in to get the new dog. There will be a fenced yard for the dogs while I'm at work, but my dogs are inside dogs when I'm home. I know about raising large dogs and dealing with dominance. Just looking for stories or suggestions from those who know the breeds. How are they with other dogs they are raised with? Are they social enough for trips to the dog park? How about with kids? Any special difficulties with them? How are they as guard/protection dogs? Thanks!

Akitas are very dominant toward other dogs, especially same-sex dogs. An Akita and a Kai would have to establish who was boss, and that might involve blood and mayhem. In my experience Akitas are generally fine with kids, but there are individual examples that may not be. Not a good bet for off-leash dog parks, especially if aggressive small dogs are present.

I say Cane Corso! They are amazing dogs! I have a 5 month old Cane Corso mix and shes the best and gets along great with our Black Lab! You really do need to have the upper body strength though for them because they are really strong! Only con I can think of is that they can be very expensive! I wouldn't bring another Akita into the mix! Good Luck! Let us know what you decide!

From what I understand Akitas are pretty much one dog dogs.
Cane Corso are usually pretty dominant but with the proper training and socialization are good with children and other dogs. Corsos are very protective of their homes and family.

Akitas are notorious for being very poor with small children.

I like Canes, they require less grooming, they have sweeter personalities, but they are every bit as protective of their home and family. As a dog park regular, I'd be much more afraid of letting my pups play with an Akita than a Cane.

What you need to do is find reputable breeders, and ask them your questions. Your questions are very good, but I think that you already know what the general answers are.
