I'm not kidding, they are always quoting from that book in their answers. And whenever I talk with my Christian friend, that is all what I hear! "The bible says...."

Do you memorize the whole bible, or is there a website that produces a quote!?
My brain would explode if I had to memorize all of those little numbers and "thees" and "thous".

I mean, I can't read it I just skim through it because it's too wordy!

Oh! And is it from that famous King James bible that you quote from? Because the one that I have (A gift from ages past) is easier to read.
(And I've read Nathaniel Hawthorne, that guy is wordy too...but at least you know what he's saying!)

I've been wondering this for ages! And I know quotes, but from writers, scientists, painters, books etc.

There are some that I know by heart because they have brought me comfort in hard times. Others are just lovely to me because they show me how much He loves me.

Hey, I am a Nathaniel Hawthorne fan! He IS wordy, though, as you say. I agree with you there.

I don't share Bible verses unless I am asked, though.

Thank you for asking this.

Have a good evening.

All of the above sweetie.

Sometimes I quote verses from memory...not because I've memorized the bible but because I've read them more than once and because they "clicked" with me in some way. I can also quote presidents, scientists, books...and favorite lines from a bunch of movies and can probably quote nearly word for word every episode of Star Trek TNG. Someone who reads the bible regularly is more likely to have committed certain verses to memory than someone that doesn't.

Many Web sites will produce a quote from several different translations of the bible. I have a myDevotion (http://www.mydevotion.com) search box on my home page...others use http://www.biblegateway.com . I use this when I can remember a phrase but not an entire quote or the chapter/verse. On Y!A, I typically use this in response to a question about whether some quote is in the bible or if I want to quickly locate a passage someone else mentions that I don't recall. I can also use it to compare translations if that's relevant to the question!

...and don't forget that many Christians have an actual copy of the bible handy...and quite a few of them have favorite passages highlighted/underlined. Mine is on my desk right next to my computer...if I need a quote to answer a question, I sometimes just pick up my bible and find it!

I've read KJV and I've quoted it...sometimes that translation puts something more descriptively than other translations. The bible I read now is the NIV...I tend to quote this more often...the simpler language sometimes adds clarity (and is easier to type...I'm not big on those "thees and thous" either)! A few of my favorite verses just sound better that in KJV, but for the rest, the NIV is more to the point and the language is more natural (to me at least).

Edit: I second the suggestion of William (answer above mine)...my son and I read the New Testament Message last summer and we both enjoyed it.

By reading their Bibles and Bible study. The same way that some atheists can remember and quote from a book written by another atheist, they read it.
I know what is being said in the Bible, because it is written in English. Maybe not in modern day English, but it has still been translated in to English. And if you stick with reading it, you would find just how interesting and understandable it actually is.

I am an ordained Minister, and I don't quote Bible verses to non-Christians. Why would you quote something to a person, that you know doesn't believe the Bible to be real? I do recommend them to read the Message. I think that might be a good thing for you to do. Get the New Testament Message and see if you don't enjoy reading it.

God be with you,
William

Many people read the Bible so much they can spout off verses and exactly what it says.

Some can look verses up fast because they know which chapter they are in.

Some, like me, may know what the Bible says, pretty much, but it takes awhile to find it.

So then are you admitting that christians are intelligent?

I doubt that any christian has memorized the whole bible, but we are taught the basic precepts of scripture every week. Add daily bible study to that and it becomes quite natural to be able to quote scripture.

You just said you know quotes from "other" books. How do you do that? You are into what you are reading. The Holy Spirit works through us, and helps us remember things. We love the Word, and so it stays with us. We "Ponder it in our hearts." As Mary pondered in her heart the birth of Jesus. We don't just read these words. We LIVE by them. God Bless! And, thanks for asking!
