i bought real maple syrup, i have every ingredient known to man for baking needs and i bought a 5lb. bag of sweet potatoes. i bought the maple syrup because i remember making this 7 yrs ago and it was in the recipe. but i forgot to research a recipe before going grocery shopping today! the store is a mad house btw and i was under pressure to try to remember what i put in it. ooo i also bought heavy cream....is that in the recipe aswell?

If it were me, I'd prepare the potatoes, put in about a cup of maple syrup, 1/4 cup of butter, a cup of heavy cream, and a good tsp of salt, a tbsp cinnamon and a tbsp good vanilla extract. I'd mash it all up together, put it in a baking pan, and save until you're ready to cook it. I'd reheat it at 350 degrees for 45 min, then cover with marshmallows and give it an additional 10 min at 400 degrees.

Kraft has a great recipe on their site, if you can find it--with cream cheese or neufachel and pecans on top.

A popular local restaurant serves this during Nov& Dec. only. There were so many requests for the recipe, they finally sent it to our local paper!! It is just melt in your mouth wonderful... and none of that canned stuff !!!


Back Porch Sweet Potato Gratin

1 T butter for greasing pan
5 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1 & 1/4 C. EACH: : flour and sugar, combined
3 C. whipping cream or heavy cream
1/2 tsp cinammon
2 T brown sugar mixture
1/2 C. warm maple syrup

Preheat oven to 350
Grease a 13 x9 pan with the butter
Arrange 1/5 of the sweet potato slices in the pan
Top with 1/5 of the flour /sugar mixture
Repeat for 4 more layers
Mix whipping cream, brown sugar, cinnamon...pour over the potatoes
Last, Top with this Sugar Mixture... combine this until crumbly ..
1 T sugar
1 T brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 T softened butter
1/4 C. flour


Combine and dot over top ... Bake for 1 & 1/2 hours ( check at one hour ) serve warm syrup on the side or drizzle over top when casserole comes from oven

Ruth's Chris special sweet potato casserole Impress your guests with this divine dish. You will have everyone asking for the recipe. Guarantee it. Makes 12 servings Crust 1 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup flour 1 cup chopped nuts (pecans preferred) 1/3 stick butter, melted Combine brown sugar, flour, nuts and butter in mixing bowl. Set aside. Sweet Potato Mixture 3 cups mashed sweet potatoes 1 cup sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 eggs, well beaten 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a medium-size casserole dish with nonstick spray. Combine sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs and butter in a large mixing bowl in the order listed. Beat thoroughly with a hand mixer to increase the fluffiness of the sweet potato mixture. Pour mixture into the baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes. (At this point, dish can be covered and refrigerated.) Sprinkle the surface of the sweet potato mixture evenly with the crust mixture and return to oven for 10 minutes. Allow to set at least 30 minutes before serving. The brown sugar and pecan crust should be slightly browned and crunchy.

I just bake them the old fashioned way- for an hour or so in a hot oven.
Scoop out the insides and you can add some salt, nutmeg, Cinnamon, butter and cream.Just mash with a fork.
You can add more butter and your maple syrup[ just a little to the top before baking it] and then bake till it looks yummy !

Here's one I came up with that is so good.......

clean and skin sweet potatoes
Mix a stick of butter and 1/3 cup of brown sugar together
Pour butter and brown sugar over sweet potatoes
Add 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon and nutmeg
sprinkle 1/2-1 cup of pecans
Bake at 350 until sweet potatoes are done.

My Southern Sweet Potato Recipe

4 sweet potatoes
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup crushed pineapple
1 cup crushed pecans
1 heaping tablespoon butter
1-1/2 cups boiling water
1 heaping teaspoon cornstarch

Bake potatoes in their jackets; peel, slice, and arrange in baking dish. Mix butter, sugar, and water and cook until it boils. Add cornstarch dissolved in a little cold water. Stir until it thickens; pour over potatoes.Top with pecans and pineapple. Bake in oven until brown.

Pre-heat oven to 400°. Scrub potatoes. Bake 40-45 minutes.

I use cooked, mashed sweet potatoes
maple syrup
brown sugar
crushed pineapple
cinnamon and ginger to taste
mush all together - taste to see if it's sweet enough (if not - add more brown sugar and maple syrup_
place in greased casserole pan
bake until cooked through.
Take out of oven - top with marshmallows - and broil briefly until marshmallows brown.

A love it with just butter. For a special treat add brown sugar and butter. syrup is good to but just butter is my fav
