I dreamed; saw myself walk down a hall. Walked by a closed door to my left, a 2nd door open, I walked in. It was a long room, 2 bedrooms without a partition. The end I walked into was empty. I walked back to the left; noticed a room divider. All the furnishings were neat and everything was in place, although a bookshelf was needed to store books, papers, etc. stacked neatly on the carpet. The bed was neatly made up with out of style bed/s but still neat, I saw the cosed door I'd walked past in the hall. That's when I saw my older son; I was so startled/surprised. Disbelief... Was expecting to see my younger son. Shocked, I spoke his name...Al! I didn't know you were here! He was preoccupied with arranging the room, putting things in place. He appeared content; matter of fact pleased, intent on what he's doing. Then he asked a question about organizing stuff. I didn't think he needed any help whatsoever. I was totally not expecting to see him; amazed. ?? Help. I miss him so much.

He lives far away and out of state; doesn't come home to visit except when there is a death or wedding.

You just answered your own question. You miss him so much and he doesn't come home except for big events/tragedies. Why don't you go see him? Check out his environment and make sure that he is doing ok. He may need your help and welcome a visit. Or he may be doing pretty well by himself and you will ease your mind by seeing for yourself.
Empty room=your emptiness without him
Room divider=the division you see between the two of you
Him asking you a question about organizing stuff=you are worried that he still needs you and you want to be part of his life even in a small way

Dreams are often meaningless, but generated by a few disorganized electrons in the brain that stimulate our imagination in a rather confused and disorganized manner, I wouldn't worry about it. Do not obsess over this. It is probably not mentally healthy to do so.
