Unfortunately, society's understanding of the word "obey" in this context has shifted substantially over the years. I left it out of my vows because, although I understand and do not object to the intent behind it, I knew that the majority of my friends would have a hard time believing that I would make a submissive wife--again, based on a skewed understanding of the word that suggests that wives are either children or doormats.

Except for some fundamentalist churches with a whacked out congregation, the word "obey" doesn't appear in any text for marriage vows.
It is actually optional.
In fact, there are no legal "marriage vows". When one gets a license to wed, it is a legal contract. One then takes the license to an appointed person who is licensed by the state to swear to the contract.
The so-called marriage vows everyone likes to fight over are by design and totally unnecessary. The only thing that makes a marriage legal is the License, the swearing to the contract and it's legal ramifications and witnessed by 2 people.
Everything else is simply fluff.

I like the old fashion way. Obey in a marriage vow to me means to trust. I see no problem here.

Since people have the right to write their own marriage vows, those who want to leave out the word "obey" are free to do so, and have been doing so for years.

You're right - obedience is really old fashioned.
After all, just look at all the high school kids involved with drugs, sex and having children, bringing guns to school and killing their fellow schoolmates and other forms of civil disobedience.
Yup - "obey" is just old fashioned, and it shows that it has been removed, to a large extent, from our society. Why not let marriage follow suit?
Remember, Jesus, who was God, submitted to his parents, who were but mere humans. Submission and obedience have nothing to do with subservience.

It wasn't in our marriage vows. My wife is not my property or my pet that she must "obey" me and vice versa.
She is her own person and I am my own person.
Period.
