There is no other explanation.
Tongues, or languages, was a supernatural gift given to certain Christians at Pentecost back in Acts 2. Not everyone received the gift. The purpose for it was so that Jews that were visiting Jerusalem from all over the Middle East and Europe could hear the gospel preached in their native language. They then carried that message back home with them and started churches. The gift of languages (tongues) was given for about 20 years after that Pentecost. The last mention of tongues in the Bible was a rebuke for abuse of the gift in 1 Corinthians, and was written about 55 a.d.
Tongues was not spoken of again for nearly 1900 years. The modern tongues movement started with the Pentecostal Charismatic movement which began about 90 years ago. This modern tongues phenomenon we see in the Pentecostal church today is considered false.

The last time I went to church was about 20 years ago.
It was a condition so that I could be friends with a classmate.
I went as an observer and wouldn't you know it, I was brought up on the stage and the snake-oil salesman put his hands on my forehead and said that I would start talking in tongues. I started mumbling because I wanted to get the heII, pardon the pun or not, outta there. He pushed me back and I fell into someones arms. It was a total crock of $hl+.
I speak 3 real languages and there wasn't a shread of logic in what this man said.
Don't babies "talk in tongues"?

Chomsky posited that we all have a deep language structure somewhere in our brain, called the language acquisition device, pre-programmed with a basic comprehension of syntax grammar and lexis. We overlay learned languages on these frameworks in order to communicate. The phenomenon of speaking in tongues, or glossalalia, has been theorised to be the most fundamental associative sounds we are able to create using this basic structure, enabling universal communication (as we all share the same brain make-up). This appears, however, to require some kind of awareness of these LAD phonemes, or at least a trigger to instigate their registering as meaningful communication. Perhaps this is one of the reasons it has been associated with religion, as religions phenomena (and high level thinking) have been linked to altered states of consciousness. In either case, much more research needs to be done before any valid conclusion is reached, and the linguistic and scientific community are still arguing.....
It should also be noted that people expressing this phenomena do so primarily in the phonemes of their own language, fuelling claims that it is far from universal. It has also been demonstrated that in most cases it is the emotive rather then linguistic areas of the brain which are active during glossalalia, detracting further from religious claims of universal comprehensability.

Just at the times they are being blessed and touched by the Holy Spirit.

i replaced right into a Witness. They practice that those issues are a depend of ethical experience, yet to bear in concepts that Jehovah advised the rustic of Israel to not be getting tatts. additionally they say that because of the fact piercings would be risky or undesirable to contemplate this, and in specific, somebody with facial tatts/piercings is merely not waiting to hold specific privileges in the congregation as they don't seem to be heeding biblical suggestion. Piercings in weird and wonderful places are seen greater of a fad than something and are additionally related to a definite stigma in immediately's society. because of the fact they provide the effect of being for to "separate" themselves from the international, it would be a contradiction in teachings to flow out and get an obtrusive tatt or an eyebrow ring. additionally, once you get baptized, technically you're giving administration over your physique to Jehovah. So it additionally sounds like a contradiction while you're taking administration over and do what you comprehend Jehovah has stated He would not approve of.

The best way as a Pentecostal to explain it is this. It is a language of men or angels(see your Bible) spoken by someone given to them directly from God. It is unlearned by you or the people hearing it. Its direct communication between you/God. Its for the initial baptism in the Holy Ghost(birth of the spirit), prayer, praise, blessing, and thanksgiving to God. You simply pray and ask for it.I am sorry about my religious explanation. But I don't know how else to make myself clear.

When a crazy person "spoke in tongues," it used to be called a word salad. But I don't know if there is a term for it today.
