I mean, I know you may not cycle on a motorway, but are there any other roads where cycling is not allowed? What about some of the larger A-Class roads? It's hard to imagine cycling down the A40 for example - is it actually allowed? Or are all roads except those classed as motorways considered suitable for cyclists?

Ah! Thank you. Can anyone give me any advice as to not end up on a motorway or motorway-designated A-road by mistake?

As already said motorways and motorway classified A roads are a no no. As are most if not all bridleways. If you feel uneasy whilst cycling pull over and let the artic or trafic past before resuming. OK you might take longer to reach your destination but personally I'd rather arrive in one piece than get run over.

Sorry Alex but bridleways are for horses. Whilst I admit they do sometimes accept cyclists not all of them do and it's better to be safe than sorry

Pavement. Also, private lanes. However, you are allowed byways, A roads and bridalways. Your also allowed cycle paths, like the MK redway system and cyclelanes. :)

Just to Clarify - COLIN, you are definately allowed on bridalways, despite what the horsey set may shout at you.

Colin, you are wrong on the Bridalways legislation. I have attended plenty of trailquests, club runs etc. and can positively state this one. I can link you to a couple of sites, but first port of call would be Sustrans. I have even e-mailed them to put pressure on farmers to open up overgrown bridalways for cycling and have had the route cleared within days. (There is a time limit on in place by which old, disused bridalways can be salvaged). Visit the link below and/or send them an e-mail and ask them for thier oppinion. Check it out, you will be pleasantly suprised :)

Don't think they'd let you cycle through a fishing lake.
