Many people alll around the world go to church on Sunday. And some even go on Wednesdays, Fridays etc... Imagine if all of these people, these thousands, millions of people actually put those 3 or 4 hrs a week into helping others, or making the world a better place, instead of sitting and listening to someone preach them the gospel... to me, trying to make a difference would be so much more productive than just church. The world could benefit so much..
Im not saying church is bad, just maybe for a few yrs... maybe just to learn the gospel, then go make a difference...
anyone care to share their views?

Its like sunday school, we sit there listen awhile and play games... how does that help the young mother who's husband was killed and she cant feed her children? How does that help the father who cant work because he has cancer? How does that help anyone else but ur own well being? To me, it seems selfish.

Ok teran, u say doctors learn, indeed they do, but do they learn for 50, 60, 70 yrs? No, they actually put what they lern into practice. why cant christians learn a bit, and then instead of being redundant and wasting time, why dont they then use what they have learned and help others for a few yrs?
and people who say church keeps u focused, keeps u on the right path... thats horrible. if someone were seriosu abt the religion, they would not need to be directed all the time. Its called willpower. i have it, but seems as if most christians lack self motivational will power if they have to directed all the time.

I like the way you think :-)
"One pair of hands at work will do more than a thousand pairs of hands clasped in prayer." (i can't remember who said this)

You obviously are ignorant of world history. The Catholic Church did not become into existence until 375 BC. Way after the 1st century. The record of history, from the Resurrection of Christ, Christians have always worshipped on the first day of the week (Sunday) and never on the Sabbath (7th day). Sunday is not a Christian Sabbath or a day of rest, or a holy day to be kept. It is the day God requires all Christians to gather together to worship and eat the Lord's Supper (communion, break bread) Acts 20:7. Christians do not keep the ten commandment law of Moses. This is not to say that Christians are free to steal, murder and commit adultery, just because the 10 commandments have been abolished. No! Christians are under a new law, a better Law, the law of Christ, (Gal 6:2) a better covenant (Heb 8:6-7). 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. Acts 20:7 On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight. Romans 14:5-6 In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable. Those who worship the Lord on a special day do it to honor him. Those who eat any kind of food do so to honor the Lord, since they give thanks to God before eating. And those who refuse to eat certain foods also want to please the Lord and give thanks to God

It is going to Church that motivates me to continue to think of helping others and making the world a better place. We are constantly filling the needs of those in our community. If I didn't go to Church I would not learn of these needs within my congregation or community. We are also learning about the gospel while there. Not sure where you are coming from.

I spent my morning in Church and spend some of my money on sponsoring 3 children in Compassion and World Vision and raising my kids. I agree I could do more but I just never seem to have time.... to give you an idea someone gave me a flight simulator game for a Christmas present last year... I haven't played in 2007 yet that I remember!

Aren't you glad your doctor didn't think that way when he/she was 18 yrs old? Instead of "Going right out and starting to operate on people and give them drugs for their illnesses", doctors 'waste' about 12 productive years out of their lives to prepare, learn what's right and wrong (VERY important when you're the one who's going to give the message that changes a life) and practice under supervision a bit before making making decisions about what helps others..... Time spent getting your cup filled allows you something to give to others.

the biblical church was just a group of believers.
they had no buildings or places of worship, hence no overhead and no building funds to rob people of their money.
we are told not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, but it does not mean we have to take money we do not have to build the most fancy and elaborate buildings to provide a soft seat to bring people who don't care about anything and give them a place to nap.
in the days of old, people would gather in homes, and when the apostles would come to town, people would even stand for hours listening to what the apostle had to say. they didn't even take up a collection. go figure.
as for church on sudays, that too was not biblical. we are to remember the sabbath to keep it holy. it says sabbath, and not the lords day. worshipping on sunday is a way to worship the son god 'Sol Invictus' AKA 'Zeus'

I'm Baptist, we hold church on Sunday to get the "spiritual food we need to help us through the next week. And in keeping with Our Heavenly Father says.Keep the Sabbath Holy.It is a day of rest.
You have 6 days the rest of the week to work and Saturday to volunteer if you want.
Sundays are often spent visting sick and shut in.And fellowship with other believers ,giving each other support and praising God's name in song and worship!
Of course, if there is an emergency someone's house got burned down, and you are trying to help them relocate for instance.Of course, you would help them.
Take care!

In our church we very much do both. First, fellowship with other believers is an important part of the Christian faith. It keeps us accountable, and lifts us up in with encouragement, and prayer, and sharing.
I have been blessed wiht starting a ladies ministry where we are pooling our skills of crafts in making blankets for the homeless, prayer shawls for the sick in hospice care, and many other things. We collect food for shelters, clothing for abuse shelters, and so forth.
There are also a number of individual ministries going on that reach out to many.
God bless.

Well, I think that going to Church is important.
I go to church 2 or three times a week. I try to help others all throughout the week. I am trying harder. Why would I give up going to church when I can help others at church too and help people outside of church at other times?

church is good to keep us on track. but the *christians* do not always practice what they preach or even what they hear from the preacher. sadly they want to throw a few bucks here and there and let others deal with the 'problems'. it is disgusting actually. but their day will come. the scriptures talk about whatsoever you do to the least of these ye have done unto me....... imagine if they had a great need and someone just threw $2 or $3 their way and felt good about 'helping' them!
what goes around comes around!
