If you are asking why atheists care about religion if there are no spirits then the answer is: Because of Christians, and other religious people.
You can pick nearly any two religions or even sects of religions and find, somewhere, that they killed and tortured each other. You also find oppression in the name of religion all over the place. That's what makes me care about religion.
Now, if you're asking how atheists can have the emotion of "caring" without a spirit in them pulling the strings, I would think that answer is rather obvious. Your brain generates your emotions.
The question is vague and can be interpretted either way.

Spirits and gods do not exist and I care nothing for them.
There are other things that I DO care about, of course, and none of them have anything to do with an invisible wizard in the sky. BUT, I DO care about such nonsense being directly connected to government and education.

Care about spirits? or just care in general?
I don't care about spirits because I don't have any evidence that supports their existence. In general, I do care because I am human and we have the capacity to care about ourselves, others and the world around us and that makes it a better place for us all. Altruism, which is what you are talking about, is a fundamental aspect of human behaviour and allows us to care for our children, friends, family groups and even strangers who are in need of our assistance. Religion only capitalises on what is a pre-existing evolutionary trait.
Think about this: if we didn't evolve the capacity for altruism, religion would have failed completely because, as a social construct, it relies on our feelings of altruism and compassion. This developed completely independently of the pantheon of gods human beings later created to satisfy, among other things, their altruistic feelings.

What do spirits have to do with caring? We have hearts. More than most christians. If you need spirits in order to care then you really have some problems.

We don't care about "spirits" (except the drinking kind). We care about the effects that believing in "spirits" has upon the behavior of those who believe.

Because it's the right thing to do. Spirits don't exist - I'm pretty sure of that - but WE still exist, right?

HAHAHA the one time "atheist" is pluralized on this site, it's not pluralized in a grammatically correct way. Go figure.
What makes me care about what? Just care in general?
You don't need to have faith in a deity or anything to care about things, as care does not come from the Christian notion of a soul, but from chemical reactions in our brains that have been around since a million years ago.

Let's get you up to speed.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I could give a flip about something that doesn't exist. That includes spirits.

"Care"? I care about friends, family and other humans because it's part of being a social animal. I care what others do because it effects the quality of my live.
Why would you assume that caring is specific to your religion?
