Bad press.
I know many many Christians and the vast majority of them are kind, humble and try to love people the way Jesus told us to.
But the noisy minority of any group gets the most press and it's the same with Christianity. Fundamentalists for almost 2 decades now have been out in the media, trying to convince the world that they are the only Christians. This is sad, because they are usually arrogant, superstitious, unloving, judgmental, and self-righteous. Their version of Christianity has been responsible for more people rejecting Jesus Christ than all the atheists and terrorists in the world.
But even though they are the minority, they get the most press.
I think of that old saying "The real tragedy is not the loudness of the evil, but the silence of the good."

I don't think you're imbeciles. I think you've been duped into accepting a system of ancient superstitions that mistakenly assume human subjective mental experiences are the basis of reality. Four hundred years ago Galileo figured out that reality does not revolve around the human mind. Three hundred years ago Newton used mathematics to essentially prove that the physical realm is objectively real. That was the beginning of science and the beginning of the end for superstitious religions.
To call someone an "imbecile" is a serious insult because real imbeciles are victims of unfortunate genetics and can do nothing about their unfortunate condition. Christians, on the other hand, are the way they are because of deliberate and willful ignorance. They chose to ignore that the body of human knowledge has increased substantially, since the Bible was written. Thomas Jefferson once said that the only effective response to willful ignorance is public ridicule. With this in mind, Christians generally deserve their reputation for systematic deliberate ignorance because they generally refuse to accept that humanity has learned quite a few things on its own, during the last few hundred years. It is now painfully obvious that science works far better than religion at explaining how the universe actually works. By your own estimate, two billion Christians are apparently too willfully naive and deliberately ignorant to comprehend that the physical universe obeys its own rules, regardless of what our superstitious ancestors once believed. Religion is the only field of human endevour that cultivates ignorance and disparages knowledge. It's not surprising that people who value intellectual progress think so poorly of Christians.

Atheists are saying that not only Christians are imbecils but they are saying that everyone else in the entire world but themselves are wrong, including Plato and Herodutus. For example Plato wrote that Atlantis was submerged under water by rising ocean levels in 1500BC, which tells us that that was the date the ice age ended as opposed to 10,000 BC that the atheists claim. Herodutus wrote that a large portion of the southern coast of Greece was submerged under water by rising ocean levels in 1500 BC as opposed to the 10000 BC date which the atheist claim. India's contemorary historians all agree that the records found in the Vedic, which convey that the Kandamaran Kingdom in southern India was evacuated because of rising ocean waters were written in 1500 BC as opposed to 10000 BC date that he atheists claim. In other words atheists are calling everyone else in the world liars except themselves. The atheists are nothing more than the most brilliant and dangerous liars in the world.

I don't.
You are just duped into believing a certain superstition. You might be otherwise very intelligent. Lots of really intelligent people believe weird things.
That said, most of the Christians (and other religious people) that participate in this forum seem less capable intellectually. Though, that could be just symptomatic of the blinders they have on in this particular subject.

2 billion? That's more than the population of China [China has a total population of about 1307460000 (Including Hong Kong & Macao)]. Impossible.

I don't assume that, studies clearly show that intelligence is not related to belief, however there is a negative correlation better believe and cognitive skills.
