Dreams and nightmares about being chased can cause us to wake up frightened or uneasy. In many cases, the dreamer is chased by an unknown figure or something so threatening that he or she can not turn around and face it. Being chased in a dream is one of the symbols that the unconscious mind creates as a metaphor for feelings of insecurity or panic.
In children, these dreams often represent emotions or feelings that the child feels are "bad" and overwhelming. The child may be at a stage of development where he or she has not yet learned to manage powerful emotions such as anger. These dreams can also represent a real physical threat, such as a bully at school or an adult that the child does not feel safe with. Talk with your child and ask if something is bothering him or her. Reassure your child that you will help and support them. If these dreams recur frequently and if you notice marked changes in your child's behavior, consult with a professional.
For adults, these dreams also represent emotions, anxieties and insecurities. You may also feel that your emotions are out of control. Your stress level may have risen above normal and you may feel that everything is closing in on you. You may feel a need to escape from a person or situation. Are you feeling vulnerable, victimized or guilty? You may be refusing to face your problems or fears in waking life. Ask yourself what you are running from in waking life and examine the issues that cause you anxiety. Running away from someone or something in a dream may also indicate that you are searching for a safer place. Pay attention to where you are trying to go. There may be a solution that you are not seeing. Look to the other symbols in your dream for clues on how you can address the problem.
If an animal is chasing you, look up the meaning of the animal in dreams as well as its significance as a totem. The characteristics of the animal can help you determine the fear you are running from in your dream.
If you are chasing someone or something in your dream, you may feel that your goals are out of reach. You may have a desire to remove someone or something from your life.
Psychology as well as some cultures and spiritual paths teach that we must face our fears before we can move on. When we have the courage and take action to deal with our fears face to face, fear loses its power over us
Successful avoidance of pursuer indicates confidence in one’s ability to avoid attackers or enemies. The significant question of the dream, however, is from whom or what are you escaping?
Repeated dreams of escape, involving exits through numerous doors and “trap doors” in a house, may reflect the dreamer’s avoidance of disturbing issues or awarenesses in his or her life.
Dreams of escape reflect feelings of confidence that you can successfully outmaneuver, outwit, and outrun your pursuers or captors. The question to ask, however, is from whom, or from what challenge, are you escaping? Are you trapped in a job you hate, or unhappy romantic relationship? Work to identify the avoided feelings that are represented by your pursuers, so that you can leave “dreams of escape” behind!
