Im meeting my doctor boyfriend's parents for the first time. My boyfriend and I are very serious and will probably be married soon. I am from California and am flying across the country to Atlanta to meet them at their home. They are Indian and pretty conservative. I would like to bring them a gift the first time I meet them but don't quite know what to get. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'd actually buy a nice house plant for them. Something unique looking and pretty. Because flowers don't last long.

Flowers, you can probably never go wrong with flowers. If you don't want to carry them on the airplane, buy them when you get into town. Also, you might want to bring them something from California - if you're in the LA area down in Hollywood the gift stores sell plastic Oscars. Those are cute. Or possibly some nice shirts with california emblazoned on them. If your near San Fransisco - try going to fisherman's wharf and getting his mother some inexpensive fresh water pearl and his father some Majong tiles or a sculpture. A box of fruit would be nice, too, especially if you get some more exotic stuff. California has a lot of fruit they won't be able to get in Atlanta, believe me, I know. I'm from Charlotte originally.Put together a nice box of exotics.

I have given the same advice before and hope it works for you -- someone else I gave this advice to said it was the perfect ice breaker.

I suggested sending a plant or flowers the day before you arrive with a note to them. Then you can bring some little item with you to give them. That way you are not encumbered with a large gift.

Good Luck and happy marriage.

California has the best and largest dried figs ,dates, apricots, raisins,or pistachio's,nuts of any kind ...a beautiful basket of these items or any mixture you would prefer. It doesn't have to be huge just a nice container full......with a label that says from California....You'll have to find out if the airline will allow this type of item aboard....Knox Berry Farm of California has wonderful jelly's and Jams gift boxed....or some great assortment of teas.....I would stick with anything made in California. They will love it.....

If you are going to go with something traditional (flowers, wine, etc) add a personal touch. Adding a cultural or personally meaningful twist will make all the difference. For example, give then the flowers that they used on their wedding day, etc.
