Today i got a brand spanking new ps3. 60gb uk version and im downloading the update but its taking for ever like hours and hours ever.. so i got to 69% after hours then! FAILED! argh how annoying anywho... i was wondering if i can speed it up anyhow or what the problem is... CHEERS btw im downloading it again and its just as slow!

Try using your computer to download the update on the Playstation website on a USB drive or on a SD Memory card and then put the USB drive/SD Memory Card into the PS3 and update the PS3 that way.
I have noticed that when downloading the updates by just using the PS3's internet connection it might take a little bit longer. Also, the reason why it's taking so long is probably because you have a slow connection. If you use the ethernet cable instead of the wireless connection, the update should download faster as well.

You just download it via the PC and put it on a memory USB drive.

don't use bluetooth.use a cat 6 cord hooked up to your router.much faster
