I want to buy my dad a leather holdter for his XD-40 for Christmas. He is left handed so it makes the shopping a little harder. He is a retired police officer and would like one that has some type of locking mechanism/retention.

I would try the Bianchi Model 82. It comes in black or tan leather for the XD-40 and left handed. It has the FingerLok internal retention mechanism secures the pistol by the trigger guard as it is inserted into the holster. To draw, the middle finger sweeps the release lever allowing the pistol to be drawn in an upward movement.

in leather, about the only locking or retention there is is a "thumb break" which is just a leather strap across the back of the holster that has to be unsnapped with the thumb as you draw. There are tons of retention holsters but they are mostly plastic or polymer. Just google "retention holsters" or "concealed holsters" and you will find tons of sights to look at. Also, you can go to a local police supply store to look, they are really expensive there, but if you find one you like, you can order it online for a lot less money, just get the manufacturers name and model number.
Good luck
