The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. -F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is probably not a great test, since in modern society, people do so all the time.

Christians pray for health to God, and if they get it, they offer God great thanksgiving.

But if they don't get it, they sue the doctor.

It seems that indicates holding at least two mutually exclusive ideas in dramatic tension.

that's not needed cleverness that's born. Any disaster calls for action. to act on something calls for some point of creativity to think of of a answer. some ideas to a disaster take place to be smart. Others coach to be disasterous. a greater desirable quote could be that "cleverness is born from necessity."

I fully agree with this.

But from personal experience I can tell you that it does affect decision-making. It can also be something of an emotional burden at times. It a difficult thing to manage, but worth the struggle, I think.

I'm not sure I agree. To hold "two opposing ideas" in one's mind is done everyday.

To hold "two opposing ideas" in one's head and think that they are BOTH truth is just ridiculous.

This is so true! I think examples can be found throughout this forum of those who practice this idea and the numbskulls that do not.

Yes, i do agree with this....it goes along with this: "if you can keep your head when all around you is losing theirs and blaming it on you, you are truly adult"....Being able to function in the midst of chaos is not the easiest thing to do...

Finally, someone thinks I am smart.

Too bad he's dead.
