Interesting letter...my question is: whats your opinion of it?

This is from a Hispanic who lives in Texas. He's had a column in the
Fort Worth Star Telegram and as you can see, expresses himself very
well.

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL

I can almost assure you that everyone who is a true American was
sickened when you saw multitudes of protesters carrying Mexican
flags protesting the new Immigration Reform Bill in the Senate. This
display of Mexican flags should give you a heads up on where these
protesters allegiance lies. Their hearts are in Mexico and their
bellies are in the United States.

As an American of Mexican Heritage I want to set the record
straight.

American Hispanics are not all thrilled with illegal immigration. I,
for more than 20 years, tried desperately to bring this national
debacle to the attention of the American people. I had the privilege
of writing for several newspapers, appeared on national and local TV
and radio programs, and was asked by many political groups to
address this serious problem affecting my former community (north
Fort Worth), city, state, and our country. Many will question how I
can speak on this subject with some authority. My simple answer is:
I lived with the problem! Trust me, it was no picnic. Never in my
life (I'm 68) had I witnessed the lawlessness, the deterioration of
my community, and the black market criminal underground activities
attributed to the influx of illegal immigrants.

To add injury to insult, politicians soon caved in to the many
demands of illegal immigrants Notably: bilingual education,
bilingual ballots, welfare aid, free medical care, etc. Through all
this national disgrace allowed by our politicians, have you all
noticed that no one ever blames the useless, corrupt, and
disgraceful government of Mexico ? In contrast, they lambasted and
criticize our country. How does that grab you?

When I addressed the dangers of our porous border between Mexico and
the United States, and the lax security of our nation, no one paid
attention.

As I observed the situation, the problem was perceived to be between
American Hispanic communities and illegal immigrants. White
Americans, it seemed, assumed that the problem was not theirs to
deal with. In other words they were asleep at the wheel. However, 9-
11 soon woke them up.

Lets be honest with each other here, white Americans vote in far
larger numbers than Hispanics do. And most politicians (Democrats
and Republicans) in our city, state, and federal governments are
white. Thus, who is more suited to fix this national disaster? I'm
sure most of you know what the answer is.

2007-11-18 09:18:56 · update #3

In summation, I'm pleading with white American voters to join me in
sending our politicians (Democrats and Republicans) a strong message
that we will not tolerate illegal immigrants telling us how to make
government policy that will make it easier for them to break our
laws. I hope you will join me in this endeavor in our upcoming
elections.

I too am hispanic and i live in NM, though i am not of mexican heritage. Most people believe just because you are hispanic that you side with the illegals. Finally there are more people speaking up about this and are letting people know that not all of us think that illegal immigration is o.k. Being hispanic i am tired of people assuming that i am pro illegal-immigration. i applaud this man for speaking out.

Well, naturalized residents can vote. So it is determined by what the Spanish phrase for immigrant intended. We are advised it intended 'resident' from someplace else, as in, now not a citizen. I have not adequate Spanish to affirm that. I consider it's going to be fascinating to look who wins. No one had heard of him, earlier than this.

While I don't like his constant reference to "white" Americans. I do understand his point. Yes for many years we were asleep at the wheel. Now we have an out of control situation. How do we deal with it...no one seems to have an honest and lasting answer.

This just shows that being an American is a lot more than skin deep. We do have to put forth the effort to make changes in our government, all Americans not just white ones.

I agree with him. We need to let our politicians know we want the illegal problem taken care of. And a blanket Amnesty is not the answer. It has already been tried and did not work.

I agree with him. What he wrote in his letter made sense. It shouldn't really matter what illegal immigrants in the United States think of any policy issue. It doesn't matter how many protests or marches they have. They can't legally vote.

He says it so well and makes no racial issue of it.....

edit: He IS stating a fact, That Most of the politicians in office are white...He's Not saying that there is something against white people in general, just that most of those making the decisions are white, which happens to be true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I completely disagree with him and the fact that he is 'hispanic' (Mexican-American) does not matter. This immigration dilemma is not about race. It would matter if he was Mexican-American and still had some hold of his roots which by what I have read, most likely does not. By having some hold on his roots he would know the reasons many do come and things of that matter easier but in the end he does not have to have a hold on his roots to understand it. It would just be easier. Another point, he is just speaking about Mexicans. It seems to me he is not proud of being Mexican-American and is taking a personal shot at it. If he really wanted to make a point he would have said 'flags of any country other than the US'. As an American, he should know what this country supposedly stands up for yet as a stereotypical American just uses scapegoats. He seems rather ignorant for the fact that many of the things he is 'pointing out' are in fact just lies. Many undocumented immigrants cannot receive much of the aid listed. Also, I do not know if you guys have noticed but the United States is filled with people from different countries. I notice many born citizens or Americans who have been here for generations seem to forget where they are from and therefore cannot understand somebody who actually still has pride for the country they are from. Which I doubt that hispanic writer has. I live in Chicago and during the marches many flags were from the Philipines, Germany, yes Mexico, Ecuador, El Salvador, and other places. There was even a Statue of Liberty covered in many different flags. why? because of what the Statue of Liberty states and because the United States is formed with people from many different places. I could keep going on and on but basically this is it. I completely disagree with him.
