I once heard this said about the shooting sports
shooting pistol is a skill
shooting rifle is a science
shooting shotguns is an artform
personally I like the challenges of pistol and extreme long range rifle shooting
but I own a few shotguns also
(its just not safe to dove hunt with a sniper rifle)

I would prefer an 223 Remington rifle because its more powerful than an shotgun and rifles have longer rang than shotguns. Shotguns seem like something a hunter would use or a person on a farm would use to kill the animals that they farm.

I have always gravitated towards the handgun. I started there and currently only possess two handguns right now. I have shot shotguns (pump only) and rifles (bolt and semi-auto). The only rifles that I really have an affinity for are good .22 bolt guns (Semi-autos are so cheap and less accurate out of the box). I often ponder getting another .223 (I had a Remington 700 ADL .223 from 2002-2003) but cannot justify it to myself now. It was traded off. I do not hunt and often shoot at 25yd and 50yd distances. I shoot at a regulated state firing range (25,50, and 100yds). For me, accuracy has to be there or I am not interested.

Yes, and each in it's own place. For the long take-down, there's nothing like a good rifle. The M-14 is very good at dropping them from distance. The service .45 is a sweet little weapon for those up-close-and-personal moments. Once you get used to it, you love it. For clearing a room in a hurry, 12-guage does the job. Messy, but effective. All of this is spoken from the perspective of military operations. U.S.N. (Ret)

shotguns, out of the three mentioned I think it's the most versatile. You can hunt anything from big game to small game, water fowl and home defence
