Hello all...

I was attempting to let my male cat, Chumbuwumba listen to the song "Cats" on my i-pod, and when I was trying to put the ear buds into his ears, he went all crazy and scratched me repeatedly, digging his claws deep into my skin and drawing lots of blood. All I wanted to do was share an intimate moment with him, and he went pyscho on me. Is there an easier way? He doesn't seem to appreciate it when I just play it on the stereo for him--in fact, he seems insultingly disinterested. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

As others have said, cats are very sensitive to things being put inside of their ears. If you want to share your music with your cat, you need to get some of those older headphones, circa 1975 that go around the ear, not in it. Also, make sure you cleaned out that nasty scratch thoroughly. The same thing happen to my buddy, Ted, and it resulted in a bad case of cat scratch fever.

Cats have sensitive ears, even on low volume having something stuck into his ears like that would panic any animal. It's the equivilent of having an air horn blared 2" from our ears. Cut him some slack, it's not his fault.

Some cats like music, most don't even recognise it as an entertainment because we've got so much noise going on around us all the time--we overload them with sound. I've only had one that ever showed any interest (he was a Harry Belefonte fan).

You may have wanted to share, but it wasn't a good experience for the cat. Best not to try that again. He's already let you know it isn't something he wants to listen to.

It's probably not a good idea to try to put anything into a cat's ears. I'm sure you were doing something besides just trying to put the ear buds in, as a cat probably would not attack you as you describe just for trying to put the ear buds in. Cats see and hear things differently from humans (which is why I have not had much success trying to get my cat to look at the TV when I'm watching, or even the catnip videos).

Now, go tend to your cuts and don't try to force your cat to listen to music when he doesn't want to.

Think about how acute a cat's hearing is compared to yours.

Now imagine someone shoving a 500watt speaker in each of your ears.

Wouldn't you scratch a bit?

Mate, you're bonkers trying to get your cat to listen to (human) music. Why on earth would you think that a cat would even want to listen to music? Music purely for pleasure is a uniquely human thing because any 'music' made by nature is a message not a song.

I wouldn't be happy if someone tried to put wierd things in my ears either! Cats work on their own program and often choose to ignore us - or pretend to ignore us. I would suggest finding a different activity to share that both of you might appreciate a bit more. Grab a favorite toy and play. Snuggle up with each other. Comb - or brush - your kitty. Don't force your kitty to do things that he doesn't want to do. Love him and let him be himself ... you'll find there's lots of times to share special moments with him!

Don't sweat it. A lot of cats don't like things stuck in their ears, and not all cats share the same tastes in music as their humans.

Maybe he doesn't like your taste in music? Cats have very sensitive hearing. It might hurt his ears.

it probably hurt his ears. Remember they have much more sensitive hearing, also cats sometimes don't like having their ears touched.

Their hearing is much more sensitive than ours, you might have damaged his hearing. You should give him to the local animal shelter since obviously you are dumb and don't know what the hell you are doing
