I am making an assumption that your outside cat got in a fight and has a bite on his leg or foot somewhere.....it will not go away with out treatment by a vet. If you were to take his temperature ( rectal thermometer with lube for a min) you will find a normal or abnormal temperature ........normal is 100* to 102*, fever is 103* with other signs (lethargic, depressed, anorexic)....recc you call your vet for an appt.

If he has swelling, you might want to check his pads for cuts, or perhaps stings, burrs, or thorns. Clean it up a bit, and if the swelling doesn't go down see a vet in case something worse is going on.
