Define hurt...
Paintball, like most active sports, involves some risk of injury. Just the nature of paint ball means you have a high likelihood of ending the day with some small bruises and welts. The only semi-serious injuries I have seen were the result of people jumping/diving and landing wrong or falling while running. Personally I got more injuries playing football than paintball.

In all the time I was playing paintball the only real injury I saw was one of our guys who got too keen and dived in to a flag station off a high bank and banged his knee on the way down. A few people have been caught wrong and ended up with minor cuts. I once had a lump three inches across from a close range shot to the arm.
You certainly do feel the hits, but they aren't the sort of thing that cause people real distress. Less than a bee sting, about like being slapped. To be honest the irritation of having been shot is way more of an issue than the pain of the impact, sometimes the paintballs don't break, that hurts more but you are so busy with the game that you just shrug it off until later.
At the end of the day you start taking inventory, until then you've forgotten about most of the shots.
If I had the choice of being shot by a paint ball, stung by a wasp or getting a mouth full of paintball paint I would take the shot. That stuff tastes horrible.
I assume you are considering playing? Go for it! Everyone who plays loves it, or at least all the ones I ever met. The funniest thing was watching women who wouldn't say boo to a goose turn in to aggressive killers in the space of a few short hours.

Once I went Paintbaling in the Winter, with snow on the ground and it was below freezing most of the day. The Paintballs, with their high water content, began to harden as the contents slowly began to freeze. Let me tell you, when they hit a part of the body which was less protected, they hurt like billy'o!
Similarly, I went one summer and it was just way too hot to wear overalls. Needless to say, when the paintballs hit your bare arms or knuckles, they hurt like hell and actually drew blood (as upon impact they effectively shatter).
Do not let this put you off, as Paintball is great fun. The adrenalin coursing through your veins rapidly numbs the pain (until you get in the bath or shower later) and you are looking for your own next 'kill'. You will end up with a few nice bruises to show off to your mates!!
Remember though, it is essential to at least wear face / eye protection, as a direct hit to the eye will without doubt blind you.

Yeah! It hurts when they hit you, especially on your face. A lot of people don't think a ball of paint would hurt, but it does. Oh, but paintball is still SUPER fun, as long as you dodge the paint. You also get to be all messy if you get hit. It's really fun though.

i've been paintballing its real fun and it dose hurt when you get shot but only for 40 seconds or so, you'll forget about it. but you can get bad bruises from it, a bruise lasted about 2 months on my arm
and you only feel the pain on your journey back

it stings like nothing else on the planet for a few seconds but then the pain goes away and you get a colourful bruise but thats about it but if you dont want the pain put a thick jumper on underneath your overalls and thick trousers etc
