Over the counter treatments do not work! Frontline is far better. I give my dogs garlic and the last time I saw fleas must be 10+ yrs ago.
The idea that garlic is toxic is a myth - garlic has been used successfully in herbal treatments for dogs for years.

I can't say if Frontline is best because I haven't used anything else - Frontline works. The active ingredients in Frontline is fipronil and Frontline Plus fipronil and s-mehoprene. The lot number on the package should correspond to the lot number marked on the individual applicators (to avoid cheap fakes). I've had a flea infestation in my house, it's a nightmare, so am not willing to mess with other brands.
I have heard through the various dog groups I belong to that a daily garlic supplement works for fleas, not ticks. My dogs get ticks on them if I don't use Frontline. I've read that fleas only live on unhealthy dogs and I don't buy that.

Hartz is defiantely NOT as good as Frontline..matter of fact Hartz (and other OTC flea products) can be deadly to your dog. It can cause skin irritations, skin burns, neurological problems, seizures and death. Flea collars of any brand can cause the same seriosu issues.
Frontline/Frontline Plus and Advantage are considered two of the best flea products and are also considered the safest. There is also Program, Capstar (kind of an outdated product now..there are better products), Reveloution. Whatever product you go with get it from your vet.

Hartz is permethrin. NO good for treatment of fleas, Garlic can be toxic to dogs. The pill is Capstar and can only be gotten from your vet. It is used and then Frontline is appied 24 hours later.
Actually in Stephanie's defense here permethrin does work as a fly repellent. With the dogs that the flies love their ears around here, we put permethrin on their ears once a month in the warm months and it helps keep flies away. There are a lot of breeders that know about this.

stay away from Hartz products. i have heard that a garlic supplement made for dogs does work to some degree, but isnt a definate solution. i would go with the frontline, but only for about 3 to 4 months, then switch to either revolution or advantage

Hartz is junk and I would not recommend it to anyone. As for Frontline, I can't say that it's the best because it didn't work on my dog, however it works great on other dogs I know. I use Advantix and it works great. It all depends on the dog. I wouldn't use garlic either because I believe it is toxic to dogs.

Hartz is not comparable to frontline. I think the pill you are talking about is called a capstar but it only works on adult fleas, it doesn't kill flea larva or flea eggs and doesn't work on ticks. Your best bet is Frontline. You only have to apply it once a month and it technically lasts for up to three months on fleas and one month on ticks.
here's some more info on fronline

Our family has tried the hartz brand before and it didn't work, it nearly killed my cat, and we then went back to Frontline Plus and it killed every flea and flea egg. So that is why hartz is so cheap, it dosn't work and i don't suggest garlic. Good luck.
