The Desert Eagle Magnums are fine quality weapons, but are HIGHLY overrated and overPRICED.
They are also too heavy & cumbersome to have ANY value in ANY defensive-combat role.

No.
They're prone to jam, the recoil springs are too soft to cycle reliably, or feed from a 'combat style' magazine with a stiffer spring. Like he said, they have a tendency to put a lot of hot brass right into your face. With one of the longer barrels available, it does become pretty accurate, but it's tricky to swing it on target with any kind of speed. I didn't think it was pleasant to hold at all. There's one at the local Gander Mtn. that only has two magazines through it, and it's selling for a little under a grand, and nobody's willing to buy it. I think that says something about how popular they are for people who aren't in a game.
Ironically, a lot of the people who don't like the AR15 style rifles love the Desert Eagle, which uses a similar but dirtier action. The recoil springs have a tendency to get very dirty, and IMI recommends cleaning them every 150-200 shots. It's harder to clean and field strip, though, so keeping it clean enough to operate is tedious, at best.

I have shot one. I shot one chambered in 50AE. It is nothing to worry about as far as recoil. I however do not like the rotating bolt assembly on them. It makes for a day of getting pelted in the face with hot brass. I have been shooting big bore pistols since I was 8 years old. This pistol is one that I have no desire to own or shoot.
The lock time is slow and the cycle time is slow on this pistol. That plus the weight and recoil of the gun and pelting you in the face. If you pulled this out in a firefight you are going to die. Also, they are not as reliable as some of the other more popular defense handguns out there.

No. IF you want the high caliber i strongly reccomend an S&W revolver. Yes the desert eagle looks nice but it's extremely over priced for a gun with practically no use. Yes you can use it for target practice but what else? No defensive value at all. Better off with an s&w revolver.

I get an adrenaline rush just holding the thing. I was worried about the recoil before I fired it, but the balanced weight of the gun is beautiful. With the slide locked back it kinda reminds me of the gun that Robocop used to tote around. The only drawback I see, is that it wouldn't be very good in High speed firefight. Unless you had the time to take proper aim of course, because if you hit your target, game over man, game over.
