Is there really any point to running with weights? Does it increase calorie burn/heart rate by enough to make it worthwhile?

It demonstrates heaviness due to gravity. Running with weights for 3 mo. then not running with them is the same as running in the mountains for 3 mo. then coming back down to sea level. Why do you think they make the weights in the first place?

They dont give a lot of benefit I suspect. You would get a better workout by increasing your speed a little, finding a hill to run up or running for a bit longer

The other answerers are mixed with hand weights. Dont use ankle weights, whatever you do, they alter your gait (running style) which can lead to injuries, even weighted trainers can do that so avoid them, but as far as I have read there are no worries with the hand held weights. In fact, many runners water bottles are so designed to be easily carried by hand!

Depends on your objective(s)......

If your objective is calorie burning only, then why not use a hand weight. It requires increased work and thus more calories. But DO NOT USE ankle weights for running NOR for walking.

If your objective is to be a better of faster runner, then hand weights are just a panacea. There is no substitute for a personal training plan in that case.

Good Luck

The idea sounds good, but it is not good for you.

Carrying weights either in your hands or on your ankles may cause injury.
The amount of increased calorie burn is not enough to risk the very likely injury you will get from this.

Run or walk relaxed in a natural manner, using weights does not let you do this.

My couch said you shouldn't run with weight because it doesn't help unless you have those that you stick onto your legs or arms.... apparently they work but I'm not sure for what

OMG you're all retards. It helps develop the calf muscle further, which aids speed/endurance.
