The real point is to get you to affirm to the court that what you say is true. If then it is found that what you said is a lie, after you swore that it was true, they can get you for perjury. The purpose then is to make you aware that if you do not tell the truth you can face charges and penalties for lying, and the court will then have a legal basis for enforcing the penalties.

You could affirm your oath on a copy of "Huckleberry Finn" for that matter, it makes no difference.

I fairly have had the comparable dillema in case you recognize you talk the fact, then making an oathe on the bible is merely not breaking the commandment. yet once you particularly must be in contempt of court docket tell thejudge you will not swear on the bible. so a procedures as answering sure sure or no no, there are various questions that require clarification.and define I mean you cant say sure if a lawyer asks you to describe intimately what you observed. !!! sure and no solutions mean the strictness of the regulation. did you fornicate? sure did you thieve ? sure in case you're saying NO , than that's evil. in case you're saying: Wellllll... and fudge then there is evil or something sinful that needs investigating. its greater desirable to stand in the previous the judgement bar of christ and show regret understanding that He already is conscious the solutions to question. optimistically a individual can come boldly by using fact he's conscious he repented of his sins and forsook them.

It is witnesses who are invited to swear on the Bible, because if they are Christians they may not regard it as an altogether good idea to take God's name in vain.

Non Christians do not have to swear on the Bible. They may have copies of other holy scriptures available for the purpose; I'm not sure about that.

I think this is mainly to do with tradition. However, I understand that if the person objects to swearing on the bible he has the option not to. I know this to be the case in some countries but possibly there may be places where this option is still not available. I believe it should be.

Well it is a court tradition, but it's kind of a way to ensure that the suspect will tell the truth, because they swear on this Holy book. Plus, Catholics traditionally believed that when you lie to God, you're damned to Hell.

Beats me.

If you actually believed the Bible at all you would know the commandment not totake oaths on anything, and so you would refuse to take an oath on the Bible.

Hence if you take the oath on the Bible you clearly must not believe in it, and the oath is worthless. You are unlikely to feel bound to tell the truth.

Thats religion for you.

You don't have to swear on the Bible. Just be sure to let the court know before you testify so that they can be ready when you take the stand.
