what kind of dog? Some breeds bark more than others. I suggest ignoring the barking and only play with him and give him attention when he's quiet.
If he starts barking, get his favourite toy. This should stop him from barking. He will get excited. If he is quiet, then throw it for him to play with. If he carries on barking, then don't let him have it until he stops

i think the bark collars are cruel but my father insisted because the poodle was out of control, he only had to use it once, now when the dog barks, he says, "do you want the collar? I am going to get the collar," and he shows the dog the collar and buttons suddenly quiets right down... now he dosent even have to show him the collar, he just says.. "do you want me to get the collar?"

You can get a special collar which gives a tiny electric shock every time he barks. It is not painful or dangerous for the dog. Something like a "slendertone" in strength, I think

Your dog might be bored and seeking attention.
Something that worked for my old dog was buying him a basketball or soccer ball. They are too big for the dog to pick up in their mouth so they learn to bat it about and chase it started out as frustration but now it's a game.
My current dog has soccer balls and will actually leave the ball for me to kick if i call "My shot" but most of the time preferrs to play on her own tossing it about
