am planning to travel on the ghan and indian pacific and staying at youth hostels when making short stops on route ,how feasable is this ? I am going to buy a rail pass and as a 63 year old woman travelling alone think this is the cheapest way to do things and the best way to meet locals does anyone think this is a good plan ?

The Greyhound buses are cheaper but slower. In either case, get a pass and be prepared to stop off in towns with only a few hundred people, a pub and an roadhouse for entertainment. You may well be the only person getting off the train/bus at that stop but at the same time it's because these places are off the tourist trail that you actually get to meet the true outback Aussie. Have fun!

The Ghan and the Indian Pacific do not stop at towns with youth hostels although you should be lucky at each end in Sydney, Adelaide Perth and Darwin. Apart from those, Broken Hill and Alice Springs are the biggest towns you stop at. If you are going to get off the train in country towns, the cheapest and often only accommodation is in the pub. Pubs are usually basic but clean.

Make sure that whatever pass you get includes a sleeper. I can assure you, you do not want to be sitting up all night in the cattle car on either train.
